Airports

I've been doing a lot of research on the Net, reading the required literature, and listening to various podcasts on how to survive the Zombpocalypse, but never found anyone's op on whether or not an airport would be a safe place to hole up. I figured the way security has changed since 9/11 in most airports here in the US, they'd be a safe bet for a short term stay. Any thoughts from the group on this?

That's actually not a bad idea in your less populated areas. Lost of open ground to keep umcoming zeds from sneaking up on you and at least some supplies. Now I say in a less populated area beacuse if you think about airports like LAX or O'Hair the huge number of possible zeds can leave you trapped if you were surrounded.

Now like some theroies state, if zeds do retain some memory like "I used to like going to the mall, I'll go hunt there" the airport is a FANTASTIC idea. I mean who likes airports?

Cell phone use in hospitals=BAD!!!!

well, yes it does have its pro's, but it does have one, life threatening con, and thats the immense size of the struture. other than that, it would ba good place to hold up.

Its not hard to get inside an airport. Glass doors and huge glass windows would be a major disadvantage.

If the airport has some kind of lockdown with steel shutters or gates, then you have a good chance.

Cant wait for that zombie invasion

Jackson Hole airport in Wyoming. You don't get less populated than that. Check it out on google earth and tell me what you think.

Our local airport is a pretty good choice as well. Sarasota/bradenton Intl. or SRQ.

Grim,

How is the size of the structure a threat to life? I don't follow that one?

It depends on the Air field. If it is more of a rural Air Field (Just a few hangers, perimeter fence, not in a city) then it might not be a bad area to try and defend. A lot of clear LOS (Line Of Sight), already a few security measures in place (Fence, Metal Hangers), and if you have some knowledge of it a possible escape in the form of Aircraft!

However, any kind of 'Commercial' Air Port is a very bad idea. They are usually in or on the fringes of major urban areas, not too much Green Space, a HUGE P&D area (Patrol and Defense) and not too many easily flyable aircraft (I cry when I see a 747 Cockpit).

It's too broad to just say is an Airport or Air Field a good idea. Comprehensive reading and planning should be done before cementing said places in one of your Z-Day Survival Plans.

Agreed. If you are ever in Park Rapids, MN (yes, I know not many of you live in MN) you can see their airfield. It's perfect. About 5 miles out of town, at least 100+ feet of clear space between the outer fence and the nearest building. About 5 hangars inside the fence and a few other structures.

Compare that with MSP, the Minneapolis/Saint Paul International Airport and it is a HUGE difference. Roads going every which way, multiple levels, glass doors, tunnels -- all-in-all it is simply way too much to be aware of and keep track of.

Big buildings are a risk, unless you have clear line of sight. If there is a lot of space with hidden areas and lots of cover then it is going to be harder to verify that everything is clear of threats.

All that needs to be said is this: FIRE = BAD

I would just like to say, that if Z-day were to happen, meet me there please Laughing out loud. haha. i know exactly where that is, and I plan to go over there when i get some free time just to scope out things around there. So, once that happens, ill be sure to message you with my findings

I think airports are to big, with a lot of windows, doors and weak spots. As for the security there really is no barricades we just have metal detectors and TSA agents.
One the flip side there will be a large amount of supplies and even books to keep your self entertained. It would be a good place to raid, but not a place to hold up.
