I'm tired, so yucky-good-for-yous was what came to mind. I am interested in compiling a list of items that, though they may not be the pinnacle of helth, they are nourishment. Snake, rat, pigeon....ants....slugs. And while I know the French hold some of these as delicacies -- I'm sorry, but French food....lost its ass, decorated it, and decided it was food. Anyway. Yucky-Good-For-Yous. Foods that may not taste the best, but will provide nourishment and nutrition in some cases. These things should be easy to get to. Try and keep the range normal to your area -- i.e., don't talk about bananas unless you live near the equator, or probably in South America. I want to hear what people know of that they can eat in an emergency that exists in their area and you would have easy access to.
Animals: Rat, Mouse, Squirrel, Chipmunk, Pigeon, ....
Insects: Grasshoppers, Crickets, Ants, ....
Plants: Tree Bark (inner layer), Rose Hips (good vit. C), Sumac (good vit C), Dandelion, Jerusalem Artichoke, Pond Scum, ....

I'd avoid the pond scum if i were you, unless you can cook it thouroughly....
wint-o-green: It groes everywhere up here (michigan, midwest in general) keep a leaf tucked in your cheek all day- decreases appetite, may help you keep going if food is scarce.
skunk cabbage: you'll know it when you find it- break any leaf, and this shit smells like high heaven. Forget rotting flesh, you're gonna smell like vomit for the next week. but it's toatally edible and digestible (unlike many other random greens), which i guess is why the latter part of it's name is cabbage. boil and strain it to inmprove the taste/smell.

salted bacon fat: jsut the fat alone. its a russian delicacy and it makes most americans sick. try it. it lasts for months, great if you cant find canned food but do find a butchery

Actually, if you find the right pond -- one that doesn't have a lot of fungus and algae from fertalizer runoff and that has clean water (so I suppose city ponds/lakes are out) -- you don't need to cook it.
Good point about the bacon fat -- add any tuber with some bacon fat and it will make both more pallatable.
A few more: Cattails, Nettles (must be boiled), ....
And SPAM -- it was a mainstay for the army, or if not SPAM specifically, some variety of canned/tinned meat...

nettles make good salad, just hold them in boiling water for a minute, then chop them, mix with cucumbers n tomatoes n some mayo or dressing

Really? I have never tried Nettles -- except as a spinach substitute, which was sucky -- so its cool to hear that it is good. Any ideas of ways to make good dressings with easily available ingredients.

hmm... pets. anyone up for cat-cabobs?
a household cat will fit entirely into a bbq grill... good idea or not? also pigeons should make good food, just scald them with boiling water to getrid of parasites and feather them. crows and otther scavengers are frowned upon. they eat decaying flesh, which leads meto assume they wont be dissuaded from taking zombie chunks out. now gulls might die from the virus but crows wont i guarantee that (its impossible to poison a crow, feel free to try i guarantee it), but still the infected zombie flesh will be quite dangerous even in the bird's guts. so no scavenger birds. also, one good thing about living in toronto is the canada goose. their size is wood-inducing even for american turkey lovers, theyre huge lazy and fat. theyll make good crismas dinner

want an easy way to catch bird of all kinds? leave a sack of dry rice or grits out for em to peck at- it gets wet inside em, swell up, they a-splode. good way to get meat if you have an excess of grain

Maybe alkaseltzer tablets? Seltzer water? I think I'd be more willing to waste these than to waste valuable grain. Grain is for eating.
pellet guns work well. their fire is very suppressed when outside and they should kill a bird from 25 or so yards. none: i speak from experience my pellet gun has 500 fps muzzle velocity, anything less is a toy and anything more is a gun
