okay tell me if this sounds good or not. here in chicago there is a small island with a single closed down factory. it's about 100 feet away from the shore on all sides. three big main generators in the basement ( I guess thats what it is). at least ten stories tall, scafolding wraps around the outside upper levels. only way to reach this place is by boat. no bridges to lower or cross. currently this factory is up for auction and im interested in turning it into a safe zone within the city. any questions, comments, difficulies?

Sounds like a solid location, you need to assess the generators, to determine if they work, and keep in mind, they do consume a ton of fuel, you may want to ask yourself if it is even possible to get fuel to them.
actually when I first found the place, one of the generators was on. I guess some homeless guy was using it. I turned it off and I visit every now and then and not once have I found it on again. the other two work as well I checked. but you are right fuel would be a problem. I was thinking of converting them into hydroelectric generators though and just put them in the water surrounding the place. but that takes some enginerring and im not that skilled. solar panals is another option I have.

Sounds like fun to me. I have alcohol, tobacco and firearms, I am good to go.
It sounds great. But considering how tall it is and how many places to enter into the factory (how many is there anywho), if zombies can swim (or float) then you fust defend 360 degress. If one gets in side and not everyone that is in your group is armed, then they might not see the zed coming and get infected. Then you have an out breack in side your safe location.
But if you can set up a defence plan and meanss of gitting food and clean water, then when zeds start coming, I'll make my way to you and help.

Actually that sounds like a pretty good idea. As for defence during the start of z-day you can have 8 people assigned to 4 hour shifts a sniper and spotter basically on each side of the roof rotate between the two every half our if they are actually engaged in watching through the rifles sight. This site would have to have a fairly big community to run efficiently I think though. And if it's up for auction how much do they want for it?

That it would. Plus to try and build your community, and make it run efficiently, you will need to put some people (I say 3 should be good) on the mainland to scaveng, find people to take in, and anything else.
But it would still take a lot of people to run
