It has come (for the people who yell at me for using the pent house form) to my attention that when a car/truck/etc. runs out of gas, it stops working. DUH. What numerous people do not realize is that to siphon a liquid out of a, lets say five gallon bucket, with a hose, and with out electricity, one would need to use a hand pump or suck with your mouth.
For the liquid to keep flowing with out your aid, the liquid must be sucked threw the entire tube. To do this with water is relatively easy, granted that you poses the sucking capability.
Now I am guessing many of the people on here assume they will use the method above to retrieve the gas from abandoned cars (for sake of arguing, the fuel is perfect) on the road. I have actually tried to do this to a limo (it hadn’t been used for a couple of weeks. I don’t steal gas, even though I should since I am broke) and it was extremely difficult. I even had some of my friends try. We simply could not get past breathing in the gas fumes.
Another way (and the safer way in my belief) is something called a Jiggle Siphon. The Jiggle Siphon is a clear tube and here is how it works, “position the source container above the container you wish to fill and put the open end of the Jiggle Siphon in the destination container. The Jiggle Siphon works by simply jiggling the ball-end of the siphon up and down in the source fuel. This feeds the fuel up the tube as the ball keeps it from running back into the source container. Once the tube is full, gravity causes a siphon effect which fills the second container. Just remove the ball end from the source container to end the process.” Plus it is only ten dollars.
This idea seams much less of a hassle then trying to kill my-self sucking on gas. So when you are trying to survive by moving in a vehicle, don’t suck. Jiggle!

You might want to look at this, Modern Gas Tanks Deter Siphoning.
I don't think I gave that a full thought. But that is just for ford, how many other vehicles out there do you think dont do that.......and when was this standerd for ford, 2005 maybe?
But thanks for thinking bout what could get in the way of "good" ideas. Its good to know people think.

"owners of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars since 2000 and trucks since 2005" And it's not just Ford it's pretty common, most modern cars have an anti siphon system (if not all). It's common enough that I would be getting gas out of vehicles with another method, unless it was older.
Didn't think it was that common of thing for cars....Huh. But if Z-day happens today, there are still many cars that predate that tech on the road.
and what method would you do, take the tank off?

It would depend on the car, for some it would be as simple as cutting the gas line, although I'm not sure how quickly the gas would come out doing that.
EDIT: A couple tips if your going to siphon gas the old fashioned way. Blow through the hose for a while to get some of the gas fumes out of it and have some gum or breath mints since your breath won't be too pleasant, a guy I knew swallowed some one time and was burping up gas for a week, not pleasant to be around.
if a car you dont want to drive has gas and you want it, and it has a method preventing you from siphoning it, the easiest way to get the gas is to puncture the tank and let it drain out. Be smart about how you are going to make the hole, and work wet. If you have a wet drill use it.

Over here it is now an Australian Design Rules standard, ie. law, that cars be fitted with fuel tanks that prevent siphoning.
To drain a tank over here what you have to do is actually drop the fuel tank from the car.
In essence you can not siphon fuel over here unless the car was made before 1998.
You're halfway there, you have the cut both fuel lines, the intake and the return, place the end of the intake in the bucket or container and blow hard on the return.

I once helped a friend siphon/steal gas when I was about 18. He made it look easy. Then years later, I tried and choked and gagged, but eventually got it going. It's not easy.In a situation of survival, I'd do like IROC says and punch a hole in the tank. Pro's----no gassy aftertaste. Cons----lotsa noise until hole is punched. You'd need a portable gas tank, funnel, hammer, large penny nail or AWL, or punch,a low catch bin (like oil catcher or kitty litter pan X2.) Some consideration should be observed with gas. Many gas stations here in the US are mixing Ethanol with their gas. Ethanol has a tendancy to absorb water through condensation, making it stale before its normal life expectancy, which isn't very long anyways. A vehicle thats been sitting for some time may be worthless as a gas cow. Gas treatment may be used to boost the octane in stale gas, but if it's too old, it won't be worth it. STA-BIL is a product that extends the life of gas, BUT it won't do anything if the gas is already stale. It needs to be added when gas is fresh. Just a reminder, so weeks or months down the road, post-ZED, you won't be risking your life for bunk fuel. I'd consider diesel power instead.Much more versatile, and other fluids can be used for fuel, like cooking oil and kerosenes.

Yeah, a lot of people here on the site agree with the diesel fuel. But either way you need fuel some how.

A thing for people to think about when they decide they are going to punch a hole in the tank, the fuel tank on many modern vehicles can be as thick as a quarter inch of stainless steel.
It's not easy.
