Music plays a huge role in our daily lives. It has served as a way for people to keep their sanity while performing grueling and horrible tasks. Now the question is: How are we going to make our music? Now I don't care what kind of music you prefer, all I care about here is in the long term how do we plan to continue music as it is essential to keeping peace of mind and morale up. After the power goes out most of the things we currently use to listen to music will be gone. Yes for a while battery operated CD players or MP3 players will be able to be used but that is only as long as you have batteries to expend on them. So far the only system I have been able to think of is the old Hand Crank Phonograph which are needless to say hard to come by, and require records. So I am looking for other ideas on ways of playing recorded music. So lets see what we can come up with.

Maybe a man-powered generator? Y'know, the one with the pedals. I doubt anyone would want to waste precious energy for a tune, though.

A music box would be a decent idea.
I'd probably just have my bass and an acoustic guitar...
Actually, that would be a good idea. If you are holed up in a location for a long period of time, one could pedal a generator for exercise and most people when they go to the gym listen to music anyways....

I like dual purpose ideas like this. There is also the chance of powering a battering cell of a bunch of car batteries strung together with this idea if you know how to do it.

The small portable solar panels that can be purchased might work, I'd imagine you could get one for an ipod or an other respectable music player, that coupled with portable speakers, could work in theory as those "docking stations" play the music while they charge them if I'm not mistaken. I personally plan on just using my fingers and the environment around me to make music since I cannot afford to spend money on such things right now.

Music is what I keep chilbert around for and in either case, I have a voice and I know how to use it.

Problem with this idea is the limited selection of music available, although I really do enjoy old music on occasion because it has an eerie quality to it so I think it would drive me nuts after a while. Granted there is newer music available on vinyl but not a lot. I prefer the idea of finding a way to produce electricity for this since electricity can serve many other functions as well. Also if I can ever get my hands on one of these I will be happy.
http://ww2.zombieinitiative.org/node/3939 Don't forget, a lot of folks here can play a musical instrument or sing. Personally I can sing and lay the drums so that'll help with having music for my group. And remember this too, you can sing in a group and if you sound horrible the other singers can drown you out, just have fun and enjoy yourself. After all why do you think soldiers sing?

Thanks...I think. ?
Many persons in the world do not consider the human voice as an instrument, but I sure do. It has to be the oldest musical instrument in existence and just about everyone has one. Everyone can sing, not all people do it well, but everyone can do it. You can also learn to sing much better from whatever level you start from.
I think that the use of instruments that are easily maintained such as the Harmonica, Guitar, and Drum will be of great importance come any life altering disaster because of the solace and redirection of focus they can provide. Then again, I am a musician and play/sing for a living so...I could be seen as biased.

I like the idea of making such instruments as well. Not to mention with a little creativity you can make an instrument out of junk.
