Physiological & Psychological Issues

Before a zombie-like infection spreads, one of the most important factors we need to be prepared for are the Psychological and Physiological stress we will be put under. Let's take it as a given that we have a better chance of first contact survival than most people, seeing as we believe on some level that zombie are a possibility. So, here we are, a few hours into the mayhem, and most of those people that were around us are now dead or undead. The people that turn into zombies are not going to be grotesque movie props, but people we know, perhaps people we were attracted to or loved. There will be neighbors, friends, family, elderly, children. If you blow a three inch hole in your eight year old neices' head, are you going to be able to move on, or are you going to break down? This is a very serious and important question. Any thoughts on how to prepare? Or thoughts in general?

Now that you mention it, that would be a problem for most people. I'd like to say, yes, I would be able too, but I don't know. I'm a martial artist and if I ever get into a situation where I have to kill someone, I like to think I would be able to, but like the zombie thing, you never know what's going to happen until it does. But I think there is a way to avoid this. After the first few days of outbreak, if it's safe, travel somewhere else where you don't know the people at all. That would then make it easier, or so it would seem to me, to dispose of the zombie hordes.

You know what, I've been thinking of that for a week now, and to honestly say I don't think any of us would be ready for the stress of all the death and choas that would follow a zombie invasion. Even thou we talk about and dream about it, I really dont think even half of us would be able to take it. No offence to anyone, I am just sayin.

I like the idea of moving to a different area, that's a good call (if feasible), and would probably save you the heartache of blowing away poor Mrs. Snookleman from down the block.

And I agree with you, Merwald, I don't think any of us are ready for that. But for those of us who are serious, I think it's a good idea to delve a little into some psych books, to get a few pointers on how to disassociate our feelings about undead loved ones.

I couldn't kill my mom if she turned into a zombie. I would freak out. Anyone else though, I think I could eventually cope.

well, i have this condidtion (i forget what its called) but i cant feel sadness or grief, so i wouldn't hesitate to have to 'eliminate' my family/loved ones if they turned.

You can't really prepare yourself for something like that. I am sure anyone of us could do something like that if its life threatening. But afterwards you'll have it in your mind that you just killed a family member or friend. Maybe you could endure for awhile and just kill the zombies. But after a few days or weeks or months it would catch up with you. Especially if you're by yourself. Because then you'll start to think if there's anyone else alive or if you're the only one left. I am sure you could cope with it all but it could take a long time. For example your family turned into zombies and you killed them to survive. Then after awhile and once the zombies are eliminated. You'll realize that you'll never see your family again. I don't really think there's anything out there that you can use to prepare yourself for something like that.

(shrugs) If you're mean and have that killer instinct it won't be a problem.

There are only seven people I wouldn't want to harm. Except I could. Although I'd do everything I could to make sure they are never harmed.
