New guy here. Spend way too much time thinking about how to survive a zombie outbreak and just found this forum. It's good to know I'm not alone!
I have a 57,500 sq.ft. industrial complex in NE Indiana. If I was already there, or if I could get there, that's where I would attempt to survive.
Complex very secure, very little glass, and has loading docks ...BUT it is not fenced.
This fact leads me to what I thought may be an interesting question ...what type of fencing do you favour? I'm thinking fencing erected BEFORE an outbreak when we have time to select materials.
Timber panel
- Waste of time - can be ripped down or punched through
Close board wooden
+ Zombies can't see through, but neither can you when stood at ground level (could they smell us anyway?)
- Penetrable with a fire axe
- Can be burned down, but zombies avoid fire?
Steel mesh
+ Potential for electrification, but probably wouldn't help because they're undead
+ Can shoot through fence without damaging it in order to kill zombies
- Undead could use an insulated tool to cut through mesh
Steel sheet
+ Zombies can't see through, but ... same as close board
+ Cannot be burned down
- Not a physics expert, but I suspect much harder to effectively electrify because of massive increase in surface area
Blockwork wall
- Great but too expensive to be realistic for most sites
I like the steel sheet backed against steel posts type fencing because it's quite tough, can be drilled for gun holes, and can be welded for door frames and other changes. The downside of this type of fencing is that it may violate, depending upon where you are, township building and visual appearance codes.

What about more flexible options -- rope, barbed wire, etc. where the purpose might be to trap the zombie by getting them tangled.
Also, i like where this is going, but I think you could include much more in here. and it would make a grreat article.
All that needs to be said is this: FIRE = BAD
(Felt this was a good article and needed a second look.)

On this subject, I've always thought that chainlink fence is highly overrated as zombie defense. It is highly vulnerable to collapse by pile up which has been demonstrated on more than one occasion at certain concerts and sporting events. The steel backed flat metal sheet has the advantage of dampening sound and blocking sight which may limit the number of undead pressing to move forward. How you would build a barrier with it after Z-Day, I don't know. You'd have to steal it from the side of highways near rich neighborhoods.
As long as I have nothing, you can never take what's mine.
Not to mention six drunk Canadians.
That is why this is called the zombie PREPAREDNESS initiative, meaning "we" should be building said defenses, structures, etc, NOW. Not when the zombies hit as then it will most likely be much more difficult to not only acquire said item, but build them in a non-hurried and effective manner.
You should read some of Sanchez's articles on food storing and hiding weapons.

yeah fencing and the such are easy to rip out of the ground, me and my mates removed a concreted in picnic table once, the park rangers were pissed off.
Personaly id go for afence with electircity runing through it.At least for a week id be safe.Because the electricity would throw zombies into convulsions rendering them unable to break my fence.
I was gona write something else but i forgot.
Cause wearing a tux during Z-Day will make me look good and die trying.
I don't have any articles. Just posts that are article-ish. Don't think I've posted anything concerning the caching/hiding of weapons. Yet any way. Have I?

I may have just been reading between the lines and hearing what you meant (or what I thought you meant or suggested). However, I am positive that you are not opposed to the idea of storing and hiding weapons and food.

That's correct. Just haven't actually posted anything that talks about said subject specifically. More on my "To do" list.
