I assume that many of you, like me, have eyesight issues. I personally use contact lenses, although I have a few pairs of glasses and a pair of RecSpecs. In the event of a zombie outbreak good sight will be necessary to survive (needed for everything from navigation to aiming a weapon accurately), and I for one do not want to be reaching into my eyes to take out a contact lens after a hard days killing. The possibility of infection is too large. Also, keeping them in for as long as it takes to stop the epidemic is not an option. I went about 8 months without taking my contacts out a year ago (I was lazy and didn't see it as a problem at the time), and eventually your eyes get to a point where your contacts wont stay in place (either the contact loses its shape from wearing out or the callouses on your eyes and the inside of your eyelids start to move them when you blink, not sure which it was). Then, when you do take them out, your eyes are extremely irritated and prone to infection. Therefore, contact lenses are a BAD idea in the event of a zombie epidemic.
Glasses on the other hand, may be better, although they still have their faults. Glasses pose none of the problems of infection, yet they may not be the best solution. During combat, fleeing, or any type of strenuous activity, glasses can easily fall off your face, become smudged (on the inside and outside), break, or have something else happen that doesn't allow you to see through them clearly. In the middle of combat or running, you may not have time to wipe off your glasses, or if they fall off you may not be able to stop and put them back on, or if your sight is very bad you may not be able to find them or fight at all.
Solutions:
RecSpecs: I have a pair and have used them for soccer and sports, and know them very well. While they are more durible than glasses and fall off less easily (if you have a strap), they still have problems with smudging and fogging because they are so close to your face. Anti fog solution does not work all that well with them, if you could find enough to last during the outbreak that is. May not be your best option, but if it is all you have they will do.
Prescription swimming goggles: One of my friends is on the swim team at our school, and these have the same problems as the recspecs, plus due to lack of padding they can irritate around the eyes. Not a very good solution.
Prescription ski goggles: I own two pairs of these, and they are very good to use. They do not fog up as much as recspecs, and offer good protection from blood spatter. The only smudges you will get will be on the outside, easy to wipe off and still see while doing so. They may not be as durable as one would like, but should last anything less than direct contact from a fist or weapon, or smacking into something while running. Also, these are 90% of the time tinted, like sunglasses. This would not be ideal for dusk, dawn, and night use. You can buy polarized goggles, but they wont help as much as you would think.
Prescription paintball goggles: This would be your very best option. I am currently looking into ordering a pair. Another friend of mine is a paintball enthusiest, and he tells me it is possible to get them. They offer great protection from blood spatter, do not fog up much (you can get fog resistant ones), and you can easily wipe off smudges. They are well padded, and are extremely durable, being that they are designed to withstand close hits from paintballs. Also, they are clear, not tinted, therfore offering greater visibilty at all times. The only downside is I can imagine they would be expensive. I believe this would be your best option, and in conjunction with a paintball mask can also offer great protection for your whole face.
Please leave comments, questions, additions, corrections, or just discuss however you want. Hope this is helpful to those who use contacts or glasses.

Lasik surgery or eye implants all around, I suppose. Kudos. I actually had a similar topic brewing but had yet to post it. I wear corrective lenses, and I was seriously concerned of the same issues.
I'll post more when I can actually see, though. I currently must rediscover what it is to sleep.

Man Im glad I have 20/10 eyesight. Better than most and all I need is a pair of dollar store sun glasses.

Ah, I completely forgot about corrective surgery. I guess that would be a good idea for some, although I have heard it can sometimes cause you to need reading glasses. Then again, during an outbreak you wouldn't be settling into a good novel all that often. Thanks for the addition

I wear glasses and have have for well over ten years now. Thankfully, my prescription is not that high and I can see without them (albeit without "perfect clarity" depending upon distance). This stated, I have books on improving one's eyesight naturally. Perfect Sight Without Glasses.
Past any type of natural or unnatural disaster, medical care of any kind which requires the use of complicated equipment will be difficult to acquire. Over the years, scientists have been researching alternative treatment methods and the above book describes a great deal of them.
I hope this helps.

Oh, I doubt that technology would be so readily available for Lasik and the like either in a survival situation. LOL I've worn corrective lenses since the 3rd grade. I have been not very keen on the Lasik procedure myself. As Chilbert has suggested with the book he has linked, there are options to helping one exercise those optic muscles. Optometrists won't often mention these as selling high cost optic wear is their livelihood. Can you blame them?
Gambit, you're welcome for the inclusion; Chil, thanks for the link. I'm always looking for ways to get the optic muscles in shape.

Did you know that playing video games (a safe distance away from the television screen) helps to exercise those eye muscles?

I should have perfect eyesight by now....
Friends, is proper English so hard?

Well, video games only stimulate certain muscles in and around the eye. There are other techniques that have to be studied and done outside of video gaming. You know that "you should take a break every 15 minutes when playing for any video game," well, it couldn't hurt you to rest your eyes. They are muscles and they need rest just like any other muscle.

Contact lenses are good, just have to be careful with them. I've had friends who have had scratched corneas as a result of mascara flaking and sticking to the contact lenses it self, and also infections because of contaminated hands. Not pleasant...
My dad got an Phakic Intraocular Lens Implant, which is a type of eye surgery. They add an artificial lens to the one already in your eye, to correct your vision. Some people may need reading glasses after this surgery. On the other hand, my dad went from being legally blind in his right eye to near-perfect vision.
