As you may or may not know, I don't know anything about guns or weapons lol. Im writing a book and need some help with the weapons part. The female character that I am writing about is going to come across a suitable weapon that she should know how to use. I dont want her to find a gun then be like duke nukem and know exactly what to do with it. I want this to be realistic.
I have done some searching already but havent found quite what Im looking for. I would really appreciate some help. Thanks!!

Maybe your character used to play on the softball team when she was little.... baseball bat?
-kitchen knife (not a sexist comment, just a common item to find.)
-I mean, finding a handgun and being able to use it is not that hard. I can imagine, she picks up the gun, points it at a zombie and pulls the trigger ---woops safetys on. After that its just point and shoot.
Good luck with your story!

If she finds a melee weapon, I'd assume that it would be a baseball bat or a Machete of sometime.
If you WANT her to find a "gun", most likely, a revolver. Super easy to learn with no instruction. She can figure out how to push the cylinder release button, the shells fall out. You put shells in the little holes, close the cylinder, and squeeze the trigger. No fuss, no muss. One of the best "fool-proof" handgun types in existence.

I agree with Nyko, the only other gun I would say that would go hand in hand with a revolver would be a double barrel shotgun.
Firstly what kind of build does she have? Is she a tall flyweight kind of girl or is she shorter and on the heavy side?
Most anyone can work a gun really. The only thing that may be hard to opperate would be the action. (The slidy bit on top) Like on my M1A it's got a very heavy pull to open and close the action. But a simpler gun she could find would be along the lines of a .9mm. All the buttons and leavers are prety obvious.
If you want a mele weapon that also depends on the size of an individual. Say we have a small person. They wouldn't be able to use a sledghammer for any ammount of time, but they would probably be able to swing a small crow bar.
a medium sized person may find that the small crow bar is just too light and too short for them to feel comfortable wielding. They may want a longer weapon. They may be able to wield a shovel or baseball bat for a bit longer than the samll person.
Lastly we have the large person. (like me) We can handle either the weapons of the small and medium people, but we are also able to wield larger weapons for extended periouds. Sledge hammers and grubbing hoes are not out of the question here.
With bladed weapons you will run into a problem. Knives that do not have a groove that runs down the blade have a high chance of being stuck in whatever it is you're stabbing into. Serated knives have the same problem. Avoid arming characters with kitchen knives or any other knife that is unlikely to have a groove down the blade, because someone like me will check out the book and throw it at the wall.
Alternitively the character could pick up a bad knife and, after sticking it into the ghoul find that they can't retrieve the weapon, but still have just enough time to escape.
I hope this helps you out.

You should check this thread: Weapons for arming inexperienced survivors.
Also, these threads should help: Split second improvised weapons.

What makes a weapon?
Improvised zombie weapon.
This article may help too (shameless plug alert): Brainpower for Survival.
Not exactly on the same topic, but a similar subject you may want to consider: Improvised Armor and clothing.
Hope that all helps.

Thank you all so much. I think I have enough info, especially since chil added those links. Thanks for all your help.
I actually like the idea of someone using a kitchen knife and having it get stuck. It would be a little suspenseful. Might add that in somewhere.

The grooves that run down a knife have nothing to do with getting stuck or unsticking. They simply lighten the blade and make it stiffer.
Hmmmm maybe she could use a nail bat? everyone knows how to use a baseball bat.

Hmmm. Sort of.
They don't always make a blade sitffer, and bo-hi helps with blade removal by decreasing suction. I'll agree that it isn't nessacary, or even that big a help, but it does it's bit.
