Survival Techniques: Part One

Like a chant, there are always a few things that people need to keep in mind. This article has some basic tips that one would hope any individual who has spent more than a few days on this site would be able chant, if not in these exact words, with some semblance to the basic premise.

Don't Be an Idiot or a Hero

In the occurence of being surrounded do not scream in fear and look around you in a circle as all the zombies go in for the kill. Keep a steady head and a steadier arm -- zombies should be able to be walked away from, so you have the advantage (more than likely) of speed and reason. Simply focus on two or three zombies and create an opening. You do not have to kill all of the zombies....at all, you can focus on killing just enough to escape or just knock them down. Further, it is equally important in this event to not get cocky. Always treat every situation with caution and a sound mind. Never act hasty or brash. Remember: keep your head and remove theirs.

Bigger is Not Always Better

The Mall of America has copious amounts of space and great abundance of supplies and even a fair amount of booze (wine store), the problem is, it is so large that it's virtually impossible to keep the place free of zombies. Similarly, using the M2 Browning machine gun might punch some big holes, but the noise would be so great that it would draw zombies from all directions. You don't need to get the biggest or the best of something -- sometimes a .22 rifle or a small rural home might be more effective.

Think of Helping Others

When under attack helping people is one of the best plans. You never know when you will need help and if you are a selfish jerk who doesn't give any aid, you will most likely not recieve any when you need it most. Remember there is great strength in numbers. Saving as many people as possible is a good idea. This does not mean to become a movie style hero that goes in and saves a bitten person being surrounded by 100 zombies and your on the outside with a knife and a derrenger. The only way you could do this is with some heavy artillery. Just keep a watchful eye out for living people and let them join up with you.

Have a Backup Location

If your smart you will gather people to join you and when you do you will need to find a place to stay. If 100 of you decide to hold up in one Super Store, you may get a little cramped and supplies will run out quickly. The answer to this predicament would be to take over multiple centers, like in a plaza for instance. Secure them so that they can be inhabitable. Also, have backup locations that you can go to in case of an emergency, including locations that are 10, 20, or more miles away if the location you're in now becomes too dangerous.

Know Your Surroundings

There may be times where you will need to put yourself in harms way by leaving your safe place to accomplish something -- supply run, rescue mission, etc. -- it is at times like these that you will want to know your area very well. Detailed maps (county maps have some amazing detail) and just basic familiarity with the area is absolutely important in case you must venture beyond your comfort zone.

Unfortunately, it's not quite as clear-cut as you make it seem.

2. Try not to think of only yourself
Whilst I admit this is a very good idea, you have to remove that it's a commodity, there are certainly times when thinking only about yourself can actually be an asset. The more people you have with you, the bigger and noisier the target you make. And when people are being attacked helping them out draws attention to yourself, making you a prime target too. You shouldn't help every person that pops by, or every person in need of aid. Doing so will completely kill your resources and fill up your safe zones. You need to pick your battles carefully. As cruel and hateful as it may sound, survival of the fittest is always nature's tactic

4. Find more than one place to hold up
This is also tricky. It involves spending prolonged periods outside looking through dozens of different places to see how they would survive against a persistent assault by zombies. Naturally, this means that you are more exposed to said zombies and that you risk cutting yourself off from escape routes while you take a look around. Find at least 1 very good place to hole up, then when you have the capability to send out raiding parties for supplies make it a secondary issue to find places where people have survived, because obviously there's something to them that makes them defensible or survivable.

Very help-full information.

1. .Getting cocky would definately not be a good idea. The best thing to do in any dire situation is to keep cool, keep thinking and DON'T act too quickly.

2. Trying to help others is always vital. I for one plan on helping as many people as possible. Although I do realize that while there is safety in numbers, having a group that is too big will cause troubles.
As far as supplies go, I would hope that I would have the strength of charachter and moral to share my provisions with others.

3. Not panicking when surrounded by zombies would be key. Though it might be easier said than done. Definately just focusing on a way out is an excellent courseof action. Getting away as soon as possible is alwats the best thing to do and conserving ammo is always necesary(SP?).

4. Having more than one place to hold up in would be nice, but it would only be necesary if you were in a particularly large group. Though it may be cramped, staying close together is just better. If your "territory" is too large it takes too much effort to keep safe.

5. Taking counter measures would be a great thing to do. Howver, before you do anything you should think about every possible aspect of every possible option. Make sure that by trying to take back a little area you're not risking hurting the safety of your current spot.
Taking back "civiization" will take a lot of time and work and planning. It's not worth it to risk your cuurent safe spot just to get back some more space.

Of course, these are all just suggestions. And when your actually in the situation you don't always have time to do things the "best" way.

But how would you know who to save and who not to save? Do you just choose randomly, every third person you come across, or who has good looks?

Generally saving the people who aren't bitten or surrounding by the undead is a good method. But eventually when your space is full you need to cut everyone off until space lets up

actually you save everyone you shouldnt be choosy. the only way you would not save someone would be if they were murdering someone infront of you or killing humans.

Perhaps if you live in the world of extradimensional spaces, but not present-day Earth, space is limited and especially so after a zombie apocalypse

Well the sentiment isn't really "don't save everyone", it's closer to "save everyone you can", the keyword being "can"

You need to pikc people by the way they look. Fat, obnoxious women who carry around a suitcase full of makeup isnt someone you cna use, therefore itd be a waste of resources and time to save her. heartless, yes, but you need someone you cna use. An athletic looking mid thirties man, that looks like he knows how to handle himself, could be use moving barricades, or (if you asked him or somehow obtained the knowledge) he could help build things, like barricades, and other mechanisms that further increase humanity's chance at survival. When any of this happens, i plan to round up my school shop teacher(welding experiences, hands-on type of person), my Life Science teacher(help with growing food, picking herbs, general health stuff), my neighbor who is a nurse(treat and nurture wounds, teach survivors how to care for themselves, showing shortcuts to good health) and any other person with a job that could benefit me in rebuilding civilization, or at least my portion of it. Deskjockeys who havent worked with their hands their entire life are some of the most useless people in this new world. Pick your crew wisely, and if you make a mistake, you'll either have to live with it, and potentially put everyone else at risk, or you can "deal" with it, whether it be by a shot to the head, restocking that person with spare rations and send them on their way, or flat out feeding them to the zed heads that are knocking at your front door.

NEVER CALL SOMEONE USELESS! That is a line I think no one should cross. Even a deskjockey can be put to use. Teach them, gain their support, and find a use for a normally "useless" talent. Numbers will always be an issue. They can pencil push and keep track of all your supplies and ammunition (making sure there is little theft). How about determine how long supplies would last, how much space is needed for your group, or determining how long and how much ammunition it would take to clear all the "zombies" within the area? I'm sure there is a lot of stuff one could think of. Even if you don't want to cover such stuff extra man power is always welcome.
