Obtaining Medical Supplies

Where can you get medical supplies?

Hospitals - Potentially the worst possible place to raid, but it also may have the best payoff. Hospitals should have all the drugs and tools you need, in large quantities. However, they are also likely to be among the first places to experience a zombie outbreak, as wounded victims are taken to the hospital before the outbreak is recognized. This makes them very dangerous places, likely to be at the center of an infestation. Also, if the hospital somehow escapes that fate, it's at the top of the list to loot so there may not be much left.

Veternary Clinics - American pets get better medical treatment than people in many countries. You probably know someone with a "$4000 cat or dog" (referring to the amount they've paid to keep the animal in good health). A vet clinic has many of the things a hospital has - they're just in animal dosages. You might even be able to find insulin (there are diabetic pets, believe it or not), and antibiotics and painkillers will be present in abundance. You'll probably want a drug encyclopedia for reference, but basically anything you can use on a pet can also be used on a human. Vet clinics are usually small too, so you probably won't have a lot of zombies to deal with. Bonus!

Drugstore/pharmacy - Lots of basic supplies, but likely to be among the very first places looted. Take a look, but don't expect to find much. If it's unlooted, you've hit the jackpot. You won't find morphine, but you can still get high-grade painkillers and antibiotics. Don't pass up the birth control...

Ambulance - Like the hospital, the amublance is likely to be deep in an infestation, and may already be looted. But if it's not, an ambulance is well equipped for emergency response. Not so many antibiotics (if any) but plenty of painkillers and other supplies. Plus, it's on wheels, so it might still be movable!

Firestations - Think of these as stationary amublances. Same kind of stuff.

Nursing Home - This one is a bit of a suprise. Many old people are sick, in pain and have chronic conditions that require medication. There should be plenty of drugs available, and a few pieces of emergency response equipment. On the other hand, the place is probably packed with the zombified corpses of the prior residents - old folks can't flee too well.

Businesses - Virtually every business in the US has a first aid kit. Not much in it, but you can find over-the-counter topical antibiotics and painkillers, bandages, gause, instant icepacks and similar stuff. Check the break room first. Large businesses and factories may have a small infirmary with slightly better supplies.

Schools - Don't bother. The only useful thing they have are bandages, topical antibiotics and asprin. They won't keep painkillers in schools because the kids steal 'em.

Prisons and Mental Institutions - As schools. Suprisingly, even though they have an infirmary they don't keep high-grade stuff around because the prisioners steal it, or lie to get it. You may have heard of "prison remedies" like combining an ibuprofin with an alieve for a slightly better painkiller. Mental institutions will have more drugs available (ie tranquilizers and mood adjusters), but most of them won't be particularly useful. Plus, all those "residents" are likely to be zombified because they had a hard time getting out.

Residences - Crapshoot. You're already looting homes for other supplies, make sure you check the lables in the medicine cabinet. You might get lucky.

Any other places?

Good post -- brings up a lot of good points. I will give a warning though, I would be very careful about medication, there are plenty of medicines with a shelf life that become toxic if not taken in the proper amount of time -- so check dates on things.

Also, given the fact that these things run out, finding out about some sort of natural medicine may be of use. The article is being worked on, but it is not ready yet.

All that needs to be said is this: FIRE = BAD

In addition, medicine administered by people who don't know what they're doing is worse than no medicine at all. That's something to keep in mind.

Which reminds me, put my mom on the "To Save" list.

Wrong, actually, on the schools. Speaking as someone who still attends one, there will be at least four or five painkillers; sometimes more or less, depending on school, state, etc. Also, some kids may have prescription drugs (many schools require registering them at the office, and, sometimes, administration by the nurse).

Also keep in mind that one of the first places most people will hit (during the first few day's) will be pharmicy's. So you will have to look harder to find what you need. Also look for names of drug manufacture's (i cant give any names i dont know them) and post them here. They would be a good place to for unraided medical supplys.

Will you hold me back? If need be I will leave you behind...

Also be wary of chemical fires. Those are a bitch and pharmacies are likely to be on fire. Much like everything else. Always be sure to have a doctor or a nurse with you at all times to aid survivors.

When in doubt, get a chainsaw.

If I don't find my own in the post-apocalyptic wasteland, can I borrow yours?

Failing that just read the instructions and be FREAKIN' careful.

Next time you get a prescription save some of it. Repeat. This way you can gather a small supply at no extra cost.

Careful about that. Meds can spoil and actually become toxic. Check with your doctor about expiration dates.

Very true, but many have a date on them.
