I was recently thinking about making armor to protect from zombie bites, and I realized I have a 2' x 2' sheet of Acetal Copolymer laying against my wall. It's 0.062 inches thick. This material is somewhat flexible as a large sheet, but as smaller pieces or when formed it's stiff, and there is no way anyone could ever bite through it. I realized that this material is relatively cheap, being slightly less than $40 for a sheet like I have. It could easily stop stabs and slashes, and act as temporary armor against a mace or a club, blocking the first one or two hits or at the very least, absorbing part of the impact. It's light, and could be formed to fit a person's body if you can make a cast of your torso or leg, or a piece of clothing you want to attach it to, and apply about 200+ degrees Fahrenheit of heat. It's also fairly chemically and environmentally resistant. You could also just bend it around the clothing for less well fitting armor. It can be bought from many plastic distributors, such as Professional Plastics, which has warehouses in many states in the U.S, and if you don't prepare, you could just loot a warehouse after z-day. My primary uses of this would be plating on the back of a glove, shin and forearm guards, and if I had more tools, shaped torso armor. There are also a number of other useful plastics, such as Acrylic and Lexan(Polycarbonate), and someone posted a way to make bulletproof glass the other day.
Anyone have any comments, suggestions, knowledge of similar suppliers or distributors, similar materials, or other uses, please comment.

Sorry man (I assume you are male, if you are a female I apologize), the site is kind of saturated with armor posts (which I assume is why no one is responding to this one); these are just some that I was able to turn up before the search function stopped working for me. Sounds like a decent idea; if you can pull it off, more power to you. Most people intend to try to avoid getting close enough to get bit but agree that armor is something worth looking into, others believe that ease of mobility will be the best armor and intend to wear things that suit the environment, are comfortable and are easy to run in.

Have you tried beating it with a hammer to see if it shatters?

at support: Thanks for the links, though most of those links are actually pretty far away from this, and the only thing that actually refers to similar armor is the riot armor thread. This is more related to the creating of this, how effective it is, and where to find the stuff, rather than just using preexisting armor. When I start trying to make it, I'll post pictures and instructions and test results.
at nick: No, I haven't, I'll try that. Along with stabbing it, beating it with a baseball bat, and slashing it with the biggest knife or machete I can find. As I said to support, I'll post test results for formed and non-formed.

Excellent let us know how it goes!

I sure as hell hope zombies don't have the beating strength of a hammer...most barricades would be useless.
Friends, is proper English so hard?
For all your linking needs, count on the captain.
If he beats it with his fist and it breaks he might cut himself.

Preliminary Testing
Flat, unshaped or stressed plastic sheet
Hammer: Cracked it after first hit, broke after second hit, however, I intend to put this on top of a thin layer of foam, not to mention it will be on top of a person, so the shock will be dissipated, rather than the way it was when I placed the plastic on top of concrete.
Stabbing: Negligible, Aesthetic damage. If you were to hit the exact same spot, literally exact, 2 or 3 times, you'd go through. And that's going to happen.... when? If you had a lot of weight behind the stab, like a killing blow to someone on the ground, or a spear, it might go through. Most weapons with more power would glance off and slide, particularly if it was shaped.
Slashing: Negligible, Aesthetic damage. If you had a heavy slashing weapon, like an axe or a heavier sword you'd go through, but once again, the padding will probably help that.
Abrasion: Scraping with the edge of a blade, negligible damage. If you did it repeatedly on the same spot, you'd eventually go through, so you could use this to shape it, but it doesn't matter in combat.
Bent plastic sheet(Not formed, just bent)
Hammer: N/A
Stabbing: Negligible, same as a flat sheet, perhaps slightly less damage, slides or glances off even easier.
Slashing: Negligible, same as a flat sheet, perhaps slightly less damage, slides glances off even easier.
Abrasion: Same as a flat sheet.

Hey kildar, whatever happened to this? Did you do any more testing to see if it's worth using in a zompocalypse?
“Meddle not in the affairs of the dragon; for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.”
I decided the plastic is great, but haven't been able to do anything with it since I don't have the foam I need to use as an underlayer if I make armor.

It probably is better to test beyond what the armor would be used for. Some sort of plastic scale mail might be neat.
