Running Forever

The man was out of breath. A stitch in his side. He is exhausted. He does not know how long he has ran, but he knows he as ran more then he ever has. He knows leaning against this building in the alley is nice. It helps to support his burning legs.

'Are They gone?' He thought. 'Did I run far enough away? Has to be at least a mile from where I started.' He looks at his watch. 'Yeah I was running for 24 minutes. Damn I am tired. Maybe sit and rest for a minute. No can't! Have to move. Have to walk, jog, sprint, gallop, crawl, drive, anything to get away from Them. I can't run forever. Have to find a spot to stay. Somwhere safe.'

The man breaths in. His breath is almost back to him.

*CLANG* Behind him! Something moved behind him. Turning around suddenly he sees something stirring on the ground. It gets up. The man knows to run.

He turns and begins sprinting the way he came. A moan comes from behind him. He turns left.

He runs 2, 3, 4 blocks. His sides hurt. His legs burn. He is lightheaded. His breathing is a bunch of fast intakes and exhales.

' I have to stop. Can't go on.'

He hears a distand moan from one of Them.

'Can't stop now. Just behind me. Find a safe spot. Need to rest soon.'

He turns left again. The sun is setting in front of him. It blinds him. He has to stop. They come into focus.

'NO! Why can't I get away?' he thinks desperatly. To his right is a another alley. Down it he runs. They are behind him. They come. They swarm into the alley. From his front. From his rear.

'Trapped! No, not like this! Wait a fire escape!' His thoughts panicking.

He jumps reaching for the ladder. He misses. They grow near. He jumps again. Miss. Their outstreched hands are a few feet away. He jumps...Yes he has hold. Up he hoists himself onto the fire escape.

They are below him. They can't reach him. They moan. It is one of a painful need. He can rest for a second maybe a minute. He sits next on the stairs of the fire escape. A window next to him. His breathing is irregular. The curtains rustle beside him. He notices a new set of out streched pair of hands.

'No! Can't be! Need to rest! Tired! Dizzy! Pain all over!' He thinks.

The hands miss him. He drags himself up the stairs of the escape. One set, 2 set, 3 set, 4 set, 5 sets of stairs to the roof. It is still following him. He collapses. His breathing is short and fast.

'Can't breath! Lungs on fire! Legs will not work' His thoughts are distressed.

He begins crawling across the roof. He reaches a antenna. He hoists himself up. He is standing again. Unsteadily though. He hears the moan. He turns to see It walking towards him.

He begins to cry. He begins to laugh. He can't understand why he can't get away.

Maybe he can't get away because he is running. 'Yes! That is it! I must fly!' His thoughts are confusing and unknown to him.

He shuffles to the edge. It follows eagerly.

"Follow me now!" He screams.

The man jumps. He flys for seconds. He is going to escape?

No he falls. Falls towards Them. Falls towards Their outstreched hands and gaping mouths. He does not know though. He dreams of flying into the horizon to a safe place to rest.
