I would suggest perhaps having window, but keeping them out of reach from anything, if the window was a level that could be reached you could have the proper reinforcement but also as a extra main defense have retractable steel doors or shutters that could be utilized when needed. A good example would be Scar Face the 1931 (I think that’s the year) version.

If one is fortunate enough to live in a Rural farming area, or by industrial or commercial construction sites, besides the obvious materials on sight, several machines and pre-built structures offer fantastic defensive positions. Large grain or transport trucks often have metal boxes on the back, and the simple addition of a tarp over the box creates an instant fortified (And perhaps mobile, should gas be available) home. Metal Silo's often dot farming landscape, and any number of these can be turned into a nearly impenetrable fortress, or at the very least serve as a temporary base of operations should one be stranded by the emergence of a previously hidden group of undead or is planning a foray into the locality to raid for other, essential supplies.
No one is really sure how the virus, disease, plague, or whatever you want to call it would be spread. It could be spread through mere contact with zed. Your best bet would be to not put yourself in a situation where you might be cornered. Avoid that seemingly empty room at all cost. Zeds still gonna be outside the door and you're screwed if you're trapped in that little room, whether there's a zombie in there or not. You might as well just let them have you because if they don't get you, hunger will. Plan for any situation so that doesn't happen
I had never considered chicken wire as a way to secure a window, but it makes a lot of sense. I also agree that plexi-glass would probably be better than regular glass. Thanks for the information.
I'm stealing Lykos's idea and going with a 24 hour self storage place. There is a brand new one that just got built about 3 miles from the house. It's about a half mile from a strip mall with a supermarket but isn't in a hugely populated area. When we get back form Ireland we are getting a unit inside so we will have access to the main building and the grounds.
There is a 10' concrete wall and only one 20' wide gate. We can park the cars inside and keep the gate form being forced open since it swings inward. I'm going to store food water and some ammo as well as other things needed to survive in the short term.
I don't think this will be a long trem place but not a bad choice to ride out the innitinal outbreak. That is assumuming we can get there.

problem with that is since the doors so big and or heavy it will be hard to close, if your being chased by a horde of zombies you might want a door that will close a little easier, now if theres a smaller door then it would be a little more practicle
Just a thought, but if you are boarding a house up, leave egress to the second story (60% of homes are two story or more) and turn a bed sideways under the window so you could look out the window while using the mattress as a platform to crawl out the window. then tie rope or sheets tied together, to the metal or wood under the mattress so that in a pinch, you can lure them up the stairs if they get through, and board the door to the room. they will continue to enter the house and make thier way to your room, (make sure you arn't visible from the window. quickly throw out the sheets or rope crawl out, and shut the window as you first start out, this should buy you the time to get down to get away, and most of them should be inside already. Ice any in your way, and make your way to the second safehouse, or to transportation. when using the sheet technique, on queen sheets, you should figure a thickness of one sheet per 50lbs for safety, so if there is a two hundred or more size person, I might recommend using rope, but for slender people or those who have a linen closet at hand while preping the room, the sheets work in a pinch. Also, this plan takes aproximately 3 minutes to prep, and offers a split second alternative to locking one's self in a basement, depending on how the flow of undead moves once they breach your perimeter. Also, you would want to have heavy furniture in the room like a dresser you could throw sideways with another dresser to act as a deadman, or support (see wall construction in reference to a deadman)
This plan works best with several people as one or two can stand watch and guard the ground level while one or two work the upstairs and downstairs preparations.

Windows, 4" bullet proof, with another 1" layer w/high tint with wire mesh on the insides.

Regardless of planning, things are always going to happen that are beyond your control. If you're going into a fight, you might as well go prepared.
Fair enough. All I'm sayin is to expect the unexpected. Life can get real tough if you're trapped in a tiny room with no supplies.
