Here are some things one might want to consider before picking a location.
1). Strategic location.
Can you wall it in? Does it already have a wall?
2). Capacity.
If you're going long-term you're gonna end up picking up some people, make sure you have extra room, and make sure your long-term plan isn't just for your family! Strength in numbers.
3).Location.
Is your site in a highly populated area? If so your ammo will deplete quickly, try to stick to mountains and valleys(I personally am picking a national park).
4).Fertility.
Now don't go all 13-year-old on me, I'm talking about the soil. Get a PH and NPK soil testing kit. My mother(a landscaper/horticulturalist) used the one linked to at the end of this post for a client.
5).Accessibility.
In a way this ties to 1, are there roads leading to your location? How many? You're likely going to have a gate at each one, the more entry points, the more effort you're going to have to put into guarding them.
6).Resources.
Does your location have lumber? Water? Game? Running water can be used for hydroelectric generators(a scrapped hybrid might work for one of those).
Conclusion: You're going to want to have at least most of the stuff listed here. Always remember to use common sense when looking for a site, a cliff with water, lumber, game, and capacity may be strategic and remote, but how are you going to get there? Are you going to climb up there with all of the gear/materials needed to get started? ALWAYS check these things BEFORE Z-day. You don't want to be sitting at your location with your soil test for three days only to find out the soil's no good.

I think you are on the right track, but you need to define the abbreviated terms PH and NPK and anything of the like.
