I just read the section of the zombie suvival guide on close combat with the undead. It's stated that the trench spike(a weapon designed in ww1) is the best close combat weapon. It's skull piceing efficiency is undoutebly true. But you must be in very close proximity to use said weapon. check out the link below to see a picture of a trench spike
I wouldn't say best, definatly not the best because you need brute strength to use it as it's a stabbing weapon, also you'll need to get really close to use it...which is extremly advised against...i reckon claws would actually be better easyier to control...and forests they can be used to climb (i know you think it's only possible in cartoons, but there are actual claws designed for climbing, think wolverine's claws (from the Cartoon X-Men) but the tips are curved a bit.
My question would be this: Has anyone here actually used a set of brass knuckles? If not, you may be in for a bit of culture shock when you realize that when you hit something with them on, you will dang near break your hand (as well as whatever you were attacking). That's right, IT HURTS! Another weapon that requires PRACTICE to use correctly and even when used properly (make no mistake) it will be painful. You have been warned.

Reminds me of an article on brass knuckles that was the article I posted on fist loads.
If anyone is looking for a modern variant of a trench knife here are a few:
First two are expensive. The ones in the last link are very very expensive. However I'd take any of them before any of the cheap reproductions I've seen floating around.
As to the question I'd have to know how you define "Close Combat". 0'-4'? 5'-20'?
For close combat, as I have said before, a hooligan tool is the best, since the spike on the one end could penetrate a skull quite handily, and not only is it a good weapon, it is also a great multi-purpose tool. This link will take you to the image.
I know, you will see the price tag and run, but, when the S.H.T.F. I would most likely be found looting one of these from a Fire Truck. (not that I endorse looting in any fashion, but this is a necessity.)
But you see those modern ones are a flat blade. Which will break a lot easier than a spike .
You're going to have to back that statement up....
If your definition of "close combat" is 0'-4' I'll say maybe. It's going to be a little tough to get a long knife out/ready within that distance. However the blade isn't the only part of that weapon. I'm a bit hard pressed to count firearms out. If your definition is 5'-20' the answer is flat out no. Not enough reach.
