A large outbreak has brought the world to its knees, power outages everywhere due to nobody running the power plants, no telephones, and most are forced to go it by foot since fuel is almost impossible to find. All you have is the unit you have been running with, and you are sick of running. It has become apparent that the local, state, and national government has given up the fight, and has turned tail and run, and rather than succumb to a state of anarchy, and zombies, you and your unit start feeling patriotic and decide to defend this nation against its fallen masses.
Your unit consists of:
You (the unit leader)
24 other people cross trained in the following: auto mechanics, first aid, building repair, hunting (also includes cleaning the game, and cooking it)
Other skills include: Use of Motorcycles, communications (at least one person knows how to operate a radio) land navigation (without the aid of G.P.S.)
Ok, you know how many people are in the group, you now get to decide what they have in their inventory, just keep in mind, the group has been fending off zombies for a long while now, so I do not want to see a huge inventory/stockpile of weapons and goods, so tell me how you are going to seek out other units, and rise up against the risen.

So what type of situation are we in?
Rural, urban, sub-urban?
Base, no base, if so what kind of defenses?
Zombie density in area.
Environment (season, weather, type of biome, attainable natural resources)
"The Way of the Samurai is found in death. When it comes to
either/or, there is only the quick choice of death. It is not
particularly difficult. Be determined and advance."
You make a good point, I left that out, my error, let me continue on the situation, it is early fall, in suburban Chicago, for those that do not know, the area is littered with hospitals, cemeteries, and homeless. Close to two major cemeteries, there is a armed forces reserve base which has a medium sized armory. Also, for those who have never visited Chicago, there are several rail lines that spoke out from the city in a wagon wheel pattern.
You have been on the run for some time now, seeking shelter at night when and where you can then continuing west away from the city. Daily temperatures average in the middle 70's and drop into the 50's at night. Precipitation is not much an issue here now, but a random shower maybe once a month. The interstate system is clogged with dead cars from people fleeing the area, however, there is plenty of pedestrian paths and bike trails that may afford safe travel, but, know this, they do run through wooded areas and some less populated areas that offer no protection, the closer you get to the city, you will find larger commercial districts and industrialized areas to the south/southwest of the city. Thirty miles southwest of Chicago is a large oil refinery.
Ok... If I had to do this... (Which I don't think I will no offence...) We'd have enough food/water for about a month. We'd have a small amount of ammo (Because people are stupid enough to use it when they don't need to....) and I'm sure every one has a melee weapon. Two of these being an Ax (hopefully large.), a Crobar (Because it can double as a weapon if needed but I'll need it for other things.). Someone also has a large pair of wire cutters.
I would search out a *small* town in the area that isn't near any other town for miles. (Plus it needs to have a lake or river nearby.) I would make sure this town holds at least one gun shop. (If I'm taking back the U.s. I want ammo d***it...) I would very carefully take back this town. Starting in the early hours of the moring when the sun first rises, I would lead my team to said gun shop. (We have supplies to last a month already.) After taking that, we start downin Zeds. We bored up the bottom of the shop and find our way to the roof. (I'll make a hole in the ceilling if I have to...) 10 of my men will be there. They well take out everything coming near the shop (We have the reasorces...) and making a hell of alot of noice... (Got to make them come to me...) After that I would have a team of 13 men (Me included because I won't send anyone into more danger unless I went with them mself. This leaves 12 men at the gun store.) go to another building across the town with enough supplies (Ammo/food/water) for a week, and repeat the prosses on another building...
After I have most of everything cleared out I give 10 men the job of building a 7 foot wall around a small part of the inner town. (This would be broken up into 3 guards and 7 workers. EVERYONE carries a firearm of somesort.) While the rest of us (This could include me, I would have ppl draw staws for either building of searching.) to search the town for supplies/Zeds. We would split into 5 equal groups. This will go on until we have the inner wall built. (After it's built loud music will play every night as well as a big bondfire burning to attract living and dead people.) Once that is done, I plan to build another 7 foot wall around the entire town. The search parties still happen but if we've found everything useful we'll only be searching for Zed. Once this is done, we'll work on other things like maybe electricity.... (I'm sure we could find some way to make that work...) After that I'd get the man that can work the radio to find something that he can trancemit abroad with and tell him to make a repeating message telling of our location. I'd make sure we have fires (or some kind of light) around the wall to get anyone I possably could to come there. I'd also start farming whatever I could either right outside of town or in a large park if we had it.
After this place was secured, we'd travel to another and repeat.
That's what I think I'd do...

O.o Dude this place is to d*** big there is no way you'd clear it out! o.o That's a suicide mission O.o Do you know how many buildings you'd have to check check and then recheck some more because you may have missed something or Zeds might wonder in? o.o Dear god... If it could be done that would be perfect, but 24 people? You don't have a hope...

I am well aware of the building count, I live here.
I have been running exercises and testing plans for a number of years now, Chicago is really not that hard.
The object of it all is to get the hell out of the city. Follow the tracks to the west and head to the suburbs or other smaller communities where there are better chances for survival. I have one town completely mapped out that I used as an exercise a year ago, and despite its close proximity to Chicago, this town is a virtual fortress upon itself. The High school resembles a medieval castle, that is perched upon a steep hill. It sits within a block of hardware stores, food stores, a small clinic which is a division of the nearby hospital, and it even has surgical rooms. There is another town to the south of that that almost mirrors that town's characteristics. The only drawback is that all they have is the high school. Not a bad deal considering its location, and just a mile away is a large superstore and a Home Depot.
Something cool about out here is that most counties have their own small airports, and a couple of the towns within some of the counties have airports as well. These are not like the major airports like Chicago's Midway or O'Hare. These have the small aircraft that one with some to no training could fly, (not that I endorse the idea, if you do not know exactly how to use it, don't, you may wind up dead.) I looked into these, and they are just about as simplistic as using the one on M.S. Flight Simulator.
So are we talking slow stupid Romero zombies or fast angry Snyder zombies?
I'd just continue to head in a southwesterly direction.
Situations would change on a day by day (probably minute to minute even) basis so improvisation would be key. Conserve ammo and food. Find maps of the area to locate resources.

I am not sure that they would be super slow, like in the Romero movies, nor superhuman fast either, I would more or less give them a speed rating of the average man at a walking pace, slower if they are injured, and slower still if they are forced to crawl. As for intelligence, that is out of the question, their actions are very limited, strictly based off of the humans primal need to feed, they cannot make decisions, they cannot rationalize, nor are they intelligent enough to figure out something so simplistic as stairs, or ladders. If you were to knock out a bridge and stand on the other side, they would walk straight off and plummet to their deaths just like lemmings.

So if they can't figure out stairs then most of the city is safe right?

In theory, the city is safe, as long as there is access to upper level locations, but, then you have to think, supplies are not infinite, you will have to leave to get more food, ammunition, water, medical supplies...
So eradicating the threat will be a priority, you cannot stay upstairs forever.

I read the entire book they can climb stairs... Not to well but they could do it... (Not trying to smash yah or anything...) Still dude I mean Chicago... 24 men... T.T I'd have to help you if I was around but it's better to run and take it another day...
