For those who aren't aware, I live in St. Paul, MN ... that's right, where the Republican National Convention was located this past week. Which means that we added damn near a half-million people to the twin cities for about 4 or five days between politicians and protesters.
The question I have for you: what would you do in a situation like that? Would it change your plans? If so, how would your plans change?
For me, this wouldn't change my plans, though it would add an additional challenge. For me, I aim to get out of the cities and away from the population as soon as possible, so while this doesn't change my plans, it does cause me to rethink my routes.
All that needs to be said is this: FIRE = BAD |
Get out... Get the ____ out. I'm betting (although I cannot Prove, there Chilbert, happy?) that moving away from densely populated areas will be the key survival issue in the opening hours and days. Get off the dinner plate. Then consider fortifying.
That's my whole flight over fight premise: If it's too dangerous, leave the area.
So, in my case, big city, the plans wouldn't change. I'd be avoiding downtown (convention centers, sports arenas) like the plague anyway.
I messed with Texas.

Pretty much.
Winning isn't a reason to get a reward but one less poke in the eye, while losing gets you two.

The main problem with the GTFO strategy is the fact that if you do not have somewhere to go when you leave (no point B from your point A) then you are not bugging out. Bugging out assumes (most of the time) that you have a predetermined "safe location" to go to. If not, then you are a refugee and thus better be able to smooth talk or intimidate your way into a safe zone/house/place. Just saying.
"They drew first blood not me..." (Stallone in Rambo: First Blood)

As stupid as it may sound, America is still, "The land of opportunity," that being said, if a group is forced to "GTFO" it may happen across one of the many thousands of abandoned structures left behind by the fleeing masses. Said group may hop from place to place in a nomadic fashion until it finds a more secure base of operation, which in the case of my unit would be in a rural area where we will be most likely to become more self sufficient. My goal is to start out here in the Chicago area, and migrate into a farming community, where we could attempt to raise a crop and live off of the land indefinitely. The smaller populated rural areas would be ideal since the land is flat, you can see anything, or anyone coming from miles away, and still be far enough away from the larger cities that would be crawling with the dead. Most farms, (at least the ones that I have been to) have their own well system, so pumping potable water would not be that much of an issue, and with the livestock, and growing plants, would be a descent amount of food, one could hold out there for a long time.
So I must agree with the "GTFO" and fall back away from the densely populated areas, to ensure survival.
With a population boost of almost 45% to any area there are suddenly going to be more problems regarding getting out and with a population boost that high your chances of getting out are going from a 60% chance of success to 10% chance of success. The reason for this theory is you will suddenly have people panicking who don't know the area and will try to get out by any means necessary and the people who do know the area will be taking the back roads instead of the main ones so most if not all of your primary and secondary escape routes are going to be cut off. My personal recommendation is that you don't bug out but you dig in and dig in deep and if you can you secure a better location then your home and you get more food then you have as soon as possible.

Will you hold me back? If need be I will leave you behind...
