All through the forums i've seen various stances on this- some people feel a simple barrier to stop some zombies long enough that you can kill them will suffice, while others indicate that noithing shorth of a fortress will stand a chance against the literally armies of zombies, whose combined mass alone seems to be a weapon.
Personally, I'm thinking as long as you stayed sort of away from major cities (sure to be teeming with the previously deceased) a simple chain link fence (the tall kind, of course) would be enough to stop them, long enough at least that you could kill them at your leisure to make sure the zombies don't pile up. That assumes that the massive hordes of the undead, found in cities or other densely populated areas, can't somehow sense a few living humans miles away, and that the only ones that will find you are those that randomly wander into your perimiter.
examples of places like these are: county jails (clear out the zombie inmates first), fairgrouds, impound or junkyard lots (mmm... carparts vs. zombies), or wacko-nutjob *camps*(make sure to clean out the militia or white supremeisist zombies, and put thier ammo stores to good use ), or some commercial farms with theivery problems.
Lemme know what you think, especially if you know of a good reason to have to hold out against hundreds or thousands of zombies *at a time*
lord forbid that the zombies can climb (think 28 days later) then i might think about a church or cathedral....

I'm with you on this; most plans i can conceive of regarding where to head in the event of the uprising are all areas of low population. For example, the Texas hill country, where the popuation density is super low outside the cities, I think you would only need a chain link perimeter, and just patrol and pick off whatever zombie wanders by. I kind of like the idea of a state park, as long as much of it is cordoned off somehow.

I like the idea of a farm with a good fence. It'd have to be a really tall fence, yes, but once you've got one, you're on a farm for crying out loud. It's got self replenishing food (if you're lucky and not dealing with GE farms), and is the most likely place to have wind power, and other middle tech luxuries.
I believe that the classic large country barn is nearly perfect in terms of defensive capabilities. FIrstly they are never near largely populated centers and always surrounded by fields (line of sight anyone?) so you will see anything coming from miles away. While you may be saying, "but wait! it has massive double doors that allow easy entrance!" you are forgetting that the second floor of a barn is usually only accessible via a ladder that can easily be pulled up and stowed away. Also you may have horses in the barn, which are zombie slaughtering machines (ever been kicked by one? OW) Also it has a pretty easy escape route, a pile of hay outside the second story loading window, just in case it somehow sets on fire or the zomebies manage to climb. Plus, what farmhouse doesnt have a large supply of ammunition, rifles and shotguns? If you've got an advanced farm, you may even have a happy electric fence and portable generator that will keep the zomebies at bay even longer than usual!
If these zombies are anything like Call of Cthulu zombies, we are totally screwed.
Well, the plan that has always been discussed amongst my friends has been heading north toward the Boundary Waters (between Minnesota and Canada). And then burning most of the forest down and constucting same sort of structure in the middle after the fire dies down.

Close Quarters Battle- something I don't want to do with Zeds.
That country perimter sounds great. Open fields of fire so that you can pick your targets and aim.
Stand off distance. That's the best thing to get.
but once mother nature gets a hold of your fields and they grow higher than a human stands then you have a bit of a problem unless you want to continually hack down the fields therefore killing off your food growth if you are in fact growing food too.

Yah, I'm with the rest of you as well. Of course, with the farm, you do have to deal with the zombies of the family living there.
A lot of farms in south western Minnesota are covered in wind generators and are still good farmland.
All that needs to be said is this: FIRE = BAD

killing the zombies that are at your wall is a bad idea.
1. the smell after a week or so will become unbearable
2. the more you kill= the bigger the pile = ladders for mindless fools to stumble upon your base
3.due to reasons above. waste of ammo!!
Man im goooood
