Sleeping

So I just watched Land of the Dead last nite before I went to bed. After it was over I turned the TV off and was laying there thinking. What would happen if Zeds tried to get to me while I was sleeping? I sleep right by my door and I have my SIG under the bed unloaded and a box knife in between my mattress and the box spring. There are nites when I sleep hard and it takes a lot to get me up. So is there something I can do for when the Zeds come a knocking at my door when I'm sleeping??

um tip toe across the floor, if they hear they'll knock all day and you'll be trapped and there you'll have to stay

lets see i figure that shutting the door would be a simple and hopeful way of prevention, and if nobody in the house minds, slide a door stop in after you shut it to insure that they can't get in but unfortunately that also prevents people from getting in like in a fire, i remember that "spy gear" or whatever it was called had a laser system thing that had an alarm that went off when someone tripped a laser that came in the kit, i don't know if they still make them anymore though

They break down your door, have one big zombie party and then eat your brain.

What the box suggests. However if you're not awake by the time they get in your home I suggest (if you have anyone else living with you) you get someone to kick you in your hind quarters and wake you up.

I have a slight problem with being unable to move when initially woken up, its kinda annoying as u can imagine... but the easiest way to prevent being eaten in your sleep is to make sure your bedroom (or where-ever it is you'll be sleeping) is well secured.

Or better yet, I've heard of this method of taking numerous small naps during the day, waking up before reaching REM sleep when you'll be hardest to wake (i don't know if REM sleep is the hardest time to wake, but i think it is) and you can cut your total sleeping time without having health issues from lack of sleep, supposed to be highly effective without the tiredness of a full nights sleep or the inability to wake during sleep.

I really do not know how that could be accurate Jimm as the Rapid Eye Movement stage of sleep is where the brain catalogs information and compress "files" (like in a computer on with almost unlimited storage space). This stage of sleep also allows for the body to heal and truly rest. Taking little naps and skipping the REM sleep stage will only force your body to shut itself down and you will lose some of your regular capabilities. When you are tired, the frontal lobe (the one that controls logic) does not function as well thus leading to bad decision making. REM sleep lets the logic center rest and the creative center takes over. Here just read this: How sleep works (from HSW).

Lock the door and put a blanket over the window. These are the two minimal things you can do without raising an alarm with your room mates or neighbours.

To be extra cautious, bar the windows and replace your door with something a little more stout, since doors inside a house are often flimsy in the first place.

I'd be setting alarms way before they ever got to that bedroom door. There must be a type motion sensor available to fit the needs of a doors and areas of your home that would be effective. Hopefully you won't be alone. That would solve your problem right there.

I agree strongly with Chilbert, I don't recommend any kind of sleep deprivation. It will mess with your reasoning abilities, not to mention your health. (I should know, I have sleep issues myself)

Well there are a few options here. The first and most logical is sleep in shifts with a partner. 8 hours is the recommended so find a way to split the shift, remember the more people you have the better. And always go to sleep 1 hour after dark, this gives you time to set up everything do everything hygienically and wake up when the sun comes up. This is well more than the 8 hour recommendation so everyone is likely to get the full amount of sleep so come the morning everyone is ready to continue whatever the plans may be. Another option might be to booby trap the door so when something enters the room an alarm clock, or other type of alarm, goes off. Personally I suggest to employ both methods, this is beneficial if the group has had a hard day or if for some reason you feel one member may not stay awake during his/her shift. Another good suggestion is to not take sleep aids or highly caffeinated products, these will make it difficult to sleep well and get up. If you must take an energy aid think about something with plenty of B vitamins they are wonderful for energy but nothing is better for energy than good nutrition so even in such an event try to keep well fed. Don't over eat as that will slow you down just as much as under eating.

Sleep is not completely understood, your HSW page said that the recommended amount of sleep is 7-9 hours, although people who live longest caim they have 6 hours of sleep per day, and infact more than that has been linked to higher mortality rates. The fact is that there are no facts about sleep. nobody knows exacly why we need it, nobody knows exacly what REM sleep or NREM sleep does.

In my last post I said (or at least i think i said) that i was not sure on the exact method so don't quote me on it, but the idea being that a few short 'naps' can be more effective than a single nights sleep.

So heres some information on it:

"Scientific American Frontiers (PBS) has reported on Stampi's 49-day experiment where a young man napped for a total of three hours per day. It purportedly shows that all stages of sleep were included."

"In 1989 he published results of a field study in the journal Work & Stress, concluding that "polyphasic sleep strategies improve prolonged sustained performance" under continuous work situations."

Although it is difficult to get into this pattern at first, it is thought that once you have this pattern the body gets into later parts of the sleep faster, but that is just a theory.

But anyway, I hope these little things have helped you to understand the idea further.

You have to work out your own sleep needs, in one study people who slept 8hrs were cut down to 6 and benefited as it was a deeper more restful sleep. I get around 5-6 hrs a night on average, if it gets light or a noise happens I always wake up, except after 8 Stella Artois and the kids make a noise, otherwise it's whenever a butterfly farts, you just have to work it out. On the plus side you can train yourself. Every Military force does that to their recruits.
