Maybe a tree fortress? Something where you can easily jump (but its probably a better idea to climb) to the next tree house? Have different forts for different supplies. One for ammunition, one for food, and one for sleep. You'd also have a high view of all your surroundings, quiet things down if you see some undead, and also deal with bandits andor criminals.

I'll quit smoking when Z-Day comes around.

Access to what kind of tools, building materials, how much time you've got, how far away exactly, and a few other things that I'm going to have to remember.

Not too big on the idea though, but I'll give a Mighty Sanchez opinion.

Because it would exhaust resources that you could use in developing a better plan of action and money to ensure equipment. Plus, no offense to you, but I don't think your an engineer. Thus, I dont think you are completely capable of completing such a task for housing yourself from the elements while providing enough strength to the exterior walls for basic defensive positioning against said attackers.

Although, if this treehouse was something you wanted to make...you could do it (or start doing it) now, well before z-day while resources are plentiful (or at least a bit easier to get). If you can find a friend who is an engineer or a carpenter, it would benefit you greatly. Then again, a treehouse is not the hardest thing in the world to build as long as you have a great foundation.

Yes- But a tree house is a death wish in thunderstorms and heavy winds. Think more towards only wanting safe houses with basements since I know Kentucky gets tornados as well.
