New to the site and I'm sure I probably won't be bringing much new to the table but I'd like to get some opinions and advice. Up until now this plan has only been discussed with a small group of friends so I'd like to find out if there is anything we haven't thought of.
The plan involves holding up at a Cabela's superstore within 20 minutes of my home. Check this link out for pictures of and information on the store. Quick synopsis of Cabela's: They consider themselves "The World's Foremost Outfitter." Their stores are rare, extremely large (this one is about two or three times as big as a WalMart Superstore,) and they carry firearms and firearms supplies, hunting supplies, fishing supplies, camping supplies, survival gear, food, clothing, and vehicles.
The store itself has steel gates that secure the entrance when the store is closed. The various utility and maintenance entrances are steel doors. There is even a "Bargain Barn" inside that has it's own link steel gate similar to those you would see a mall storefront use that could be a great fall back location.
What would be available within the store:
1. Thousands of firearms
2. Tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition
3. Tons (literally) of ammunition reloading supplies including powder, bullets, primers, and casings.
4. Hundreds of bows and thousands of arrows
5. Tactical gear including bincos, scopes, knives of all shapes and sizes, vests and rigs, mags, etc.
6. Tons (again, literally) of dried, vacuum packed, and survival foods such as beef jerky, MRE's and various other types of long shelf life foods.
7. Thousands of gallons of fresh water along with various water filtration and storage systems.
8. Hundreds of fresh fish. Yes, Cabela's has a fully stocked Trout pond along with a huge aquarium that contains various species.
9. A large exterior generator with fuel to power the entire store for quite some time.
10. Various smaller gasoline generators.
11. Various types of off-road and 4x4 vehicles from quads to Ford trucks.
12. All types of clothing including specialized clothing for severe winter and other weather conditions.
13. Various electronics devices including radios, walky talkies, GPS devices, scanners, etc.
14. The list goes on and on...
This is a great location itself, but there is more. The store itself is on the junction of a state highway and an interstate highway at least 10 miles from the closest residential area. The area itself is a fairly well built up commercial area that provides 1000's of yards of clear fields of view in all directions.
Within 5 miles of the store:
1. Various fast food restaurants and convenience stores.
2. Two jewelry stores
3. Many gas stations
4. A large state police barracks
5. At least 3 car dealerships and a large RV and boat dealership along with a quad/dirt bike/snow mobile dealer.
6. A large industrial machining shop with the equipment needed to build or modify just about anything.
7. A decent sized river.
There is a national guard barracks about 10 minutes away and one of the largest military bases in the state under 50 miles away.
This location allows near limitless food, shelter, water, weapons, vehicles, and supplies. It will be a great place to establish ourselves for quite some time, launch raids from, and eventually establish other locations. We have various ideas for quarantine zones for survivors and which way we go would really depend on the volume we see.
So what does everyone think? What are we missing? What haven't we thought of? Is this a good plan, a great plan, or an awful plan?

how many other people do you think have thought of this?
also how many other people will raid it before you get there?
the only way I can think of for you to secure the building initaley is if you have people there when Z-day hits you lock up the building and have armed sentry's on the roof and you will need AT LEAST 20-40 people to secure and hold that big of a location and have guards on at all times to make sure you dont get hit by raiders or looters.
ill leave the rest up to other people
Will you hold me back? If need be I will leave you behind...
We're counting on taking control of the building as soon as possible. If there is already raiding and looting going on by the time we get there it is going to be difficult and we will pretty much have failed. We'll have about 10 to 15 men with various family members. We'll be able to secure the building quite quickly and semi-permanently (welding the few doors there are outside of the main entrance which will have steel gates and strongly defending an emergency exit.) Within a day or so we should be using the vehicles on-site to make barriers on the road entrance. The men that will be there are highly experienced firearms handlers and a few of us are well trained. Sentries and look-outs on the roof are part of the plan as well.
I don't want to sound rude or whatever but I didn't read past "The plan involves holding up at a Cabela's superstore." Because even though you have it thought out its the more than likely the largest problem you have. As many people will more than likely try to flock to all superstores because of their guns, food, etc.
But if you can manage to get there first with your friends and barricade it well enough to keep zombies & raiders out then you would have a pretty good Stronghold with a vast amount of resources.

I completely agree and I don't think you are being rude. Believe me, I will going no where your standard grocery store, walmart type of place. Especially one in a residential area. The purpose of this post is to get other's opinions, strengthen our plan, and hear things we haven't thought of.
Our plan hinges on acting early. If we are not decisive we are pretty much SOL. We're counting on the masses being uniformed and slow to act, listening to the "stay in your homes" stuff they're going to hear. Hopefully those that do flock to stores early on are going to go the stores in the residential areas, grocery stores, walmarts, etc.
We have enough firearms and "type A" personalities to pretty much handle anything we'll face in this initial action unless we are sorely behind.
Well I think that the lack of food a Cabela's store would have people ignoring it to flock to superstores like wal-mart or other so acting fast may work.
Although you may want to try to make a plan where you get down there, and only remain there for a short amount of time until you could move to a area less likely to be attacked by other survivors.

Yea I'm not touching this idea with a 100 foot zombie proof pole.
"I am the warrior in whom the old ways have combined with the new."
You have to remember this is American. If anything happens that involves people staying in their homes. Means there's going to be looting and raiding going on. For example how people reacted after Katrina. Just picture that just larger and with the undead. Plus if there's a place that holds firearms, ammo, food, and whatever else. People will get to it by any means necessary. Even if it means driving a larger truck into the building.

I don't mind sounding rude if it gets the point across from time to time. Personally, I almost didn't even click on this post because you (DeltoP) used one of those "all encompassing" words in your title ( ULTIMATE ). There is not "Best" or "Ultimate" or "Perfect" when it comes to most things because these terms in and of themselves are RELATIVE to the situation.(I addressed this idea in another thread: The Perfect Zombie Fortification System) Furthermore, your idea to hold up in a Cabella's is misguided in my opinion because one of the first places to be raiding, looted, or swamped with survivors will be ANY place that has or sells GUNS or WEAPONS. Where there are survivors in mass quantities, there will be pandemonium (not to mention large scale zombie bait). Let's say you DO, get there first...Now you have to "convince" the employees working there (depending on the time of the outbreak) that there are "zombies" and that you "need" the weapons. You don't believe that at least one of these employees will be a former (or current) member of the U.S. Armed Forces or a Police officer? You don't think the employees behind the gun counter are give up those without a fight do you? Hell, they have the high ground and a seemingly endless amount of ammunition (but who needs it if they taze you, I mean this is a lose-lose situation for you). They do have security personnel in plain clothes in most places (meaning you won't know who they are until they have tazed you). Also, think about the customers who frequent said store. You don't believe that at least one of them is going to try and prevent you from looting the place? You have taken too many assumptions when it comes to the zombie survival game. In my opinion, a look at the FAILED POSTS section at the thread entitled The Art of Looting and then the counter-post to itThe Art of Not Getting Shot.
The point of zombie "PREPAREDNESS" is to have the items available to use BEFORE "it" happens! This means you should start stockpiling non-perishable food, water, ammunition, etc...NOW! Don't wait until Z-day and you "have to" acquire said goods with the added danger of everyone else doing the same (not to mention the ever present and obvious zombie threat). Switch up you strategy and you will succeed. Why not try waiting out the first couple weeks in your barricaded homes respectively? I mean, "if" you have stocked up on the items you needed to survive and you had your houses well barricaded enough (not too difficult, plus no one will steal your stuff if you are Home to protect it). If I were you, I would be checking my home for any places that needed extra protection instead of worrying about looting a Cabella's.

Dear god... Going back to what I said I wouldn't....
Does anyone remember what New Orleans police, along with National Guard, Army, and law enforcement groups that voluteered to go to New Orleans did down there? Large confiscations of arms/ammunition. Then when they heard rumor that a group of not so nice people were going to hit the place that stock piled said arms/ammunition they sent additional forces there to make sure it didn't happen. Think about that for a few seconds.
