VW Diesel Hybrid: The perfect apocolypse vehicle?

So, I had some trouble actually pulling myself away from the Volkswagen site when I found this out: Volkswagen is coming out with a Diesel Hybrid Golf, though, sadly, there are rumors that we will not see this version, so all you Euro-trash on this site get something that we American's can't have.

Some may disagree, but I think that this would be the ideal vehicle for after z-day:

(1) Diesel fuel is relatively abundant, it can even be made with plant oils.
(2) Gas milage of this vehicle would be an astounding 69.9 mpg
(3) Unlike regular fuel, diesel would not degrade in the same way

I'm sure there are people who would disagree, but my god, what more could you ask for (that is perhaps besides more space?)

I would get one... I just would have a huge issue with the winter issues. I love deisel, its just tough as hell to start the vehicle unless it is constantly plugged into an electronic socket or kept in a warm environment.

Okay, plant oils when left in the car for a day or two without driving will gum up and will screw the engine.

it's like cakeing the inside of the engine with jelly.

Matters on how refined you make it and what oils you use. Corn doesnt cake up that quickly.

To my knowledge thats only an issue if the weather is cold, I think you'd have to have the engine above 50 degrees or so to make sure the oil is actually liquid.

Also, there is some issue with the oil like that possibly being more corrosive, but I would hope VW, the fine engineers they are, would put better quality parts in.
