Dogs are useful to alert of "zombie" location but wouldnt be a very good defense mechanism. Dog vs Zombie, Dog bites zombie in neck, Zombie doesnt drop you shoot zombie in head 12 hours later dog falls ill. day later dog dies. Depending on the thread of virus dog becomes zombie. . .doesnt sound like something ide want to have to deal with.

Yes, we have a black lab and a golden retriever.. Almost 300lbs of dog. Oh and one cat who could care less, 3 big Oscars but they would be no use at all. No I wouldn't eat them.
I am not suggesting that we train them to attack, but tracking for hunting would be nice. I am just saying we could protect them just like we protect ourselves.

Protecting pets was never a question. I Am Legend brought that view stand to a whole new level. But helmets and jackets/ kevlar suits will only prevent them from performing to their best. Would rather have a dog running around with nothing on and be fast and being able to hear normally to pick up hazards than to have a pup not being able to pick up a sound due to some piece of protective equipment that makes a noise when they move. Dogs especially so- Their hearing is extremely sensitive. Plus- why slow your pup down and make them more exhausted by adding on weight to their burrden. Think also about water resources... You have no clue how much more heat your pet will be conducting and storing under the gear until its too late and fatigue sets in at the wrong time.
Just my opinion on why its a hazardous thing to do. Though for recreational use- it would be cute.

Yes it is pretty cool. It seems to me that K-9 units now can stalk drug dealers hideouts and labs more safely now days. I just dont see the point for my pups wearing bulletproofing. Plus- There might be a slim chance I need to shoot them later down the road... Why make me waste ammo?

I do think dogs will be valuable come z-day, for a variety of reasons, but i really dont think any form of dog armor is in any way practical.

I do see your point but you have to admit that a jacket that can stop an ak round for your dog is pretty cool.
