Is the will to survive an outstanding factor in determining the ultimate possibility of living through a time of crisis? I believe so. It may be true everybody has the will to survive, but I believe that there are different quanitities of this quality in each individual person. This is proven by a wide range of people from suicidals to Bear Grylls and Les Stroud. When it comes down to it, your very life may depend on whether or not your willpower is strong. My father is the perfect example of this. After years of smoking, he doveloped a cancer on his tounge that would claim his life in the span of two months. He had a 5% chance to live. He was given two options: to have a comfortable last two months, or to go through all sorts of painful procedures and what-not to have his 5% chance. He took the latter of the two, and proceeded to become the quickest and most successful recovery the treatment center had ever witnessed. This, he has come to believe, was derived solely from his will to survive. With his family and freinds in mind, he continued to fight the cancer until it was gone, and is still alive today. This shows that the odds may be heavily weighed against you, but determination and willpower can render odds obselete. The power of the mind is truly amazing when it comes to survival.

I agree that the power of the mind is something not to be underestimated in any individual. In Ninjutsu, the study of psychology was (and still is) a huge factor, for it is stated that the ninja was able to "control the mind of their adversary" through different means. Also, any survival book or catalog one reads will have the statement somewhere about keeping ones mind occupied and staying positive no matter what the situation. The human mind is one of the most powerful weapons available in any circumstance. By the way, have you read my article (shameless plug of my own) called Brainpower for Survival under the Getting Away tab?
"They drew first blood not me..." (Stallone in Rambo: First Blood)

Yes I did, and I loved it. There is no knowledge that is not power, in my most humble opinion. I just wanted to focus on willpower, even if there may be more powerful qualities in a person. It's just amazing what some people can do based on the fact that they don't want to die. sometimes you don't have to be smart, sometimes you don't have to be strong, sometimes you just have to desire. That can make all the difference in the world.

Well said!
"They drew first blood not me..." (Stallone in Rambo: First Blood)

Chillbert, this might be a good addition to your article. There are tons of individuals who will tell you that if you believe you can do it (or, conversely, believe in a higher power helping you) it will be easier and your liklihood of success is increased. Now, if you can find a few studies that verify this ... that would be a perfect addition to your article.
All that needs to be said is this: FIRE = BAD
I shall have to begin researching to find the "proof" then and write another article. Sounds like a plan, I shall start searching.
