During my time here at ZPI there has been a great deal of talk about looting for supplies and 'living off the land'. Going over these two things I have realized a few new things not to mention busted some of my own posts. However that is a story for a different day. I'll focus on the latter.
Those of you planning on tossing Rambo's knife, a couple issues of Playboy, and beef jerky in your pack then heading into the hills to survive on the hunter/gatherer lifestyle need to get it out of your head. It has been discredited and dismissed by quite a few survivalists.
Unless you live the life now, and I do mean live. Not go out in the woods for a couple days/weeks during your vacation. You WILL NOT make it. Even those who live the life don't make it some times.
Don't agree with me? Fine. You can starve, freeze to death, get eaten, etc.
If you're still thinking about it just remember you're dealing with Mother Nature on her terms; not your's. Might I also mention she happens to be a real bitch especially when God slacks off on alimony payments.
Other than that go ahead and start working on supply caches. Plain and simple. Beans, rice, salt, lard, ammunition, spare clothes, matches, etc. Just keep track of how long some of it has been there so you can rotate out the older stuff. To let you know ahead of time ammunition does have a shelf life. Old mil-surp corrosive stuff lasts longer. If you choose to stock up on that include whatever you need for cleaning.
Go ahead and practice survival stuff in case some of what you stash is lost or stolen. You're going to need both that and whatever you have there to survive. Not one or the other. Both.
Even if everything goes as planned and you don't need any of what you stashed it will make life easier. Maybe save your life if you hit a rough spot.
Was in another thread, but I had to bring it up here. Thanks Nick47.
Quote: I definitely think that there will be an outbreak of animal life after z-day because there will be fewer humans trying to control the population.
And for those of you who plan to head out to the wild, make sure to keep your group under 30 people. Hunter and gatherer groups have to keep their numbers at around 30 or the land will not be able to sustain them.
Two factors I should have added to this thread. Over population. Not enough food, bad winter hits, a large number of animals die off, and then you're in trouble.
Large number of people could lead to over-hunting, a major problem if over population results in a massive die off. Not to mention gatherers stripping an area bare is a problem.
Could take a few months if this were to happen for things to go back to normal. Could take years.
You can scream, stomp your feet, and yell "There won't be a large number of survivors", "My group will control the population", or something of that nature until your face turns blue.
#1 We don't know how many people will survive or how long those that make it through the outbreak will last.
#2 We haven't the slightest clue in how to manage wilderness areas. Yellowstone happens to be a perfect example of this.
#3 We don't know what mother nature will throw at us. We don't how the ecology of the area in which we are staying will change. Plain and simple; we don't know a d*** thing.
What you cache is sort of like an insurance policy just in case something does happen. So you won't starve, freeze to death, and/or get eaten.

Great post.

Though I do think you should have made it a different topic name.

Right, because GA actually survived.

Yeah, but none of us are him.

Would you all prefer me saying Robinson Crusoe? He survived, but in a way he cheated.
another awesome mental image
and to agree with the others that was an awesome post

Of course.
Im not too sure if you want to name it after someone who survived. I would have said - "You are all screwed - Nubs".
