We should start a movement where each city of over 100,000 has its own citizen militia. They would be there to respond to not only zombies outbreaks, but also from things like anarchists, nazis, gangs, the Al-Queda, and give relief in natural disasters.
Cons would be the police might get mad and suspicious, and cities might start having wars with eachother.
Cops + SWAT teams = "militias", in the sense that they are a civilian organisation with an official command structure and have plans in place for *most* disasters (they're in the books, even if you have to dig for them). I think what we should consider is a loosely-affiliated group of people without any licenses other than the normal ones for firearms (since you'll never get any police force to spend money on a zed plan).
Melee weapons: Because there's nothing more satisfying than bashing in a zed cranium with your new best friend, Mr Crowbar™. (Product demonstration brought to you by nick47)
BAD idea. I live in Michigan and we have the Michigan millita. If you think one racist with a gun, is bad just give an excuse for a bunch of them to get togher with their guns and you have problems. We have the national guard and that is enough.
There is a crucial difference. We have a plan of action in a specific case of disaster. When you have a group of people with guns who's mandate is to "protect the area", you have a big area for assumption on what needs protecting. For instance a zombe outbreak does not mean we go out and try to racialy purify the area.

Who said anything about racially purifying any area? Sure, the Michigan militia has been deemed and targeted as a radical militia in America, but that doesn't mean you can't become a member of a different militia. Not a single document says that there can't be multiple militias in one state.

Of course there can be multiple groups and they are legal, but inviting a bunch of people to get together with their guns and try to "protect" something that doesn't need protecting is just stupid. Ok, eventually a millita might be needed, but if they are just sitting there with guns and nothing to do but "train" then they are eventually going to try and apply thir "training" to something. And when they look for something to "protect" they might get into trouble.

What you just said is exactly what the National Guard is. They don't do shit, but they gather with their guns and train with nothing to protect until the time comes. What is the point of training you may ask... It is simply to be prepared and know what it is you have to do in case that scenario actually happens. Wouldn't you want to gather with friends or comrades and do a training procedure on quickly evacuating your area or boarding up your house to time yourselves? It's a damn good idea to do as such.

Yes and they get paid for it. I never said being prepared is bad, When you practice a skill you want to use it, it begs to be used, Evacuation plans should be done on an individual family level. Plans for protecting you house should be done on an individual level. Protecting an area is usually a group task. And when you get a group together to "protect" the area then they will try to "protect" the area even if it does not need protecting. In America you have the right to do what you want as long as it doesn't interfere with the rights of others. Well taking the law into your own hands is interfering with my rights. I don't trust a person's judgment just because they have a gun. A group is not always made of the people in the group. Most of the time it is made of one leader and a bunch of followers. A persons judgment can sometimes be alterd by the group. A group that is millitant is usually looking to enforce it's beliefs. I should not be subject to harm if I don't believe in a civilian groups beliefs. I willingly live in America so I choose to be subject to it's laws, not to the laws or beliefs of a self organized millitia.
Ok, then join a different task force. Arm yourself and protect your own damn rights from the radicals. No matter, there are radicals in every type of organization. Sure the National Guard gets paid, but they don't tell people that they have to join. They are funded by the government just as most of the other militias. Some militias are created for a specific purpose without government funding, yet you have seen many of their resources at work. Hell, the Red Cross is a militia meant for a totally different purpose. It does not matter about how you feel on a specific group. It matters on the ultimate purpose of having militias. It is you right to protect America. You can live here. You can make the choice to join a militia or to choose to not have weapons or vote. You have the ability to say - "Eh, I think I want to be a diagnostician or an astronaut" because you can chose to better yourself and the people around you. Don't take the actions of one group and place it against all types because you don't like how it is. Improve upon it and make something more. Sure there will always be those types of groups that will cause a rebellion or make the people rise from the ashes and start a civil war. You just have to choose what you want to partake in and then stay true to it.

The reservers and national guard are the only government funded malitia. I'm not saying that you don't have the right to form them. But I don't like them and I think they are a bad idea. If a disaster ever strikes they should be formed from the survivors. But I think haveing a group of people trying to protect an area with guns, with no current or official training is dumb, and it invites trouble. If you want to protect your country or town join the police force or army.
