they could be used as one, but considering the size & shape of blade. they can be used in a pair for a scissor like effect to let you decapitate whatever.
i've also never seen one used by itself .

I love it. I just don't have the ability to order one at the time. Plus, Walmart has their machetes on sale for 9.96. I cant beat that offer...

You can when you have a machete with the blade bent at an odd angle after a few minutes of chopping.
