go on, you ran into an armory, there is several million boxes of ammo... but you can only grab and carry one weapon. it can be handheld or mounted.
what will it be? personally im leaning towards a twin 50cal autocannon thats usually antiaircraft. i figure with unlimited ammo, a longrange meat grinder is what i need
this is, of course for a more humorous and a lighter tone of zombie slaughter. im not seriously gonna look for a aa gun
for those of you who arent into big guns... http://www.idleriot.com/media/videos/Cool/1198/The_Second_Amendment.html this ought to turn some heads

Considering the rate of misfire on those things and the fact that I would have no idea how to fix it if it broke I'm going to go with a good old fashioned .50 cal sniper rifle with starlight scope. I've always liked the idea of sitting in a topfloor suite and just blowing shit away.

I'd love to carry an XM8 - I'd normally carry it in the carbine variant with the M320 grenade launcher, but also carry the 20" barrel with the bipod-equiped handguard.
The shorter barrel would be useful for in-house fighting, and still long enough for accuracy out to 250-300 yards, sufficient range in urban combat.
Swap out the longer barrel with the bipod, and it'd be useful for both mowing down hordes and picking off individuals.
And the grenade launcher would be damn useful for clearing out or slowing down groups of zombies - it may not kill them, but a few shattered limbs will slow them down!
Also, 100-round drum magazines save on precious seconds of mag-swapping time when the zombies are breathing down your neck!
C'mon - a 6.2 pound rifle, manufactured by H&K, with swappable parts? Hell yeah!
Oh, it's H&K eh? Sign me up...those guys are the shit.

odd... wiki stated that the xm8 project is currently in production. am i misinformed? is it avalable to the public?
*edit*
oh and high-caliber figh-speed weapons dont have alot of misfire problems for two reasons (not to say that one cannot occur):
one: bullets are high class, you wont see BMG rounds misfiring
two: the whole inertia of the mechanism. i figure if the first 20 rounds of a minigun dont misfire, it will start roaring and feeding rounds at crazy speed and anything that doesnt shoot will just fly out. this is even less of an issue on miniguns and other artillery that are powered by an external motor or etc. example being gau-8 or the vulcan cannon, a misfire wont mean shit to them.

This is a toughy. If you have enough time to get away I would go with a crossbow of some sort since they are silent and usually pretty light wieght. I know the reloading takes time, but if you can get away you should not have to use it very often.
Now if I had to grab something and use it right away I would have to go with M1 Garand with a bayonet at the end. It will be good for long and middle range with the ability to be used as a hand to hand weapon if needed since most stocks were hard wood and the bayonet would be good for stabbing in the eye if the zombie is knocked down.
The XM8 project hasn't INSERTd the M4 yet in Army stocks, but it looks like a sure thing. It'll probably take a few years for H&K to make a civilian version of the weapon system (which my not look much like the XM8, but be based on the same parts). As it stands though, the Army should have it soon, so someone's armory has to have quite a few, even if it is Natick!
Just remember kiddies, guns are awesome and fun to use. . .but an edged weapon never runs out of ammo. The experienced Katana practitioner could do a lot of damage to the undead population.
"Everyone's your brother till the rent comes due. . ."
I think a bigass edged weapon would be best. Guns run out of ammo. Ronin is right. A katana would be one of the best things to have.
The blade would get dull, however. Don't call me an expert, but I think the blade would get dull after about 250 head loppings.
Still, it would get you out of a bind just as well as any automatic rifle, if not better. Bind meaning lots o zombies in close quarters.
EDIT: Something like this would be keen. If you could lift it.
Keep in mind that this is a purely theoretic thread and you would have an unlimited ammount of ammo for this weapon. But it is true that you never have to reload a sword and if you do have to reload it you shouldent be messing around with swords.
