Zombie Survival Games

I say that they need a game that fits zombie survival better than the 'see-a-zombie-shoot-it' type games that exist now. Here's what I propose:

A video game thats somewhere between X-Com, The Sims, and Warcraft 3 with maybe a little GTA3 thrown in. I'm sick of just killing things, I want there to be a game where we must manage resources, manage relationships, and still do some zombie killing every now and then. Of course, if this were like a World of Warcraft type game, well, that would just rock since programming the relationships wouldn't matter -- it would simply be a matter of setting up the game engine and letting people go nuts. In fact, WoW would be the perfect game engine for this sort of game.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Not only would this be a great idea for putting forward a practical way to prepare for Z-day that would be fun and keep your neibors from thinking "what are you doing on my lawn with a baseball bat and a crowbar?", this sounds like it would also be a good game.
In terms of systems, I think that the WoW engine would be a perfect candidate for such a game. It's nearly fully interactive and has a good interface, but I think it would well benefit from an added physics dimention for those odd thinkers out there. Maybe add in the physics engine from Half Life 2 and youve got a game that can pit you and some friends against a zombie hoard that can be downed by pushing fridges out of windows on them.
The resource management might be a tricky thing to handle, but then again, in a dystopia you can pretty much count on having only what you and your zombie-fleeing buddies can carry on you. But yeah, I really like the sound of this game.

Bring on the zombies, I've been playing ZOMBIE DYSTOPIA!

Pet Cemetary tried to warn you... they don't come back the same.

Anyone got any programming experience? Wanna try and make an alpha version of this? Laughing out loud

We can create this sort of thing within Half-Life Engine, but that costs money and requires a lot of coding. I think eventually, maybe when I'm done student teaching, I can mess around with an NWN version of this -- doesn't require half the coding and none of the modeling. Damn my half done projects!!

Something somewhat like this already exists. There was a mod for GTA: Vice City that consisted of a zombie outbreak. there were even missions and such included in the package. How cool is this? I'm not saying we can't make our own (heck, I could script it) but this might serve as an inspiration.

I was killin' zombies before it was cool.

OMG

Just played the gta mod above- quite frankly, im sick of gta, but that is sweet= only wish there were more....

on the topic of zombie apocolypse- people tend not to play mmorpg's where their character can permanantly die/become zombified. no one wants to work all the way up to a level 369 chainsaw engineer only to be critically bit and die. forever. On the flip side, having players come back in a zombie game ruins the feel- as does frequntly seeing a massive population of other players running around. what *might* be good it to have characters log on, form groups *outside* the game game (think BF2 server select system) then be stuck into an instanced map of the zombie city, with the
4-20 people you joined the game with- if you die, you go back to the server select- you can can keep playing, but to your first group, you're dead and gone. might disrupt continuity, but each session would be fun, without ruining the mood.

"just don't let them turn into skeletons; the last thing we need to deal with is a resitance to slashing weapons"

Would it be worth it to create another forum or blog or Wiki to talk about these things? That way we can deal with all the topics separately....keep it more organized.

Maybe. But, probably not. For now, at least, one thread is enough. We're just tossing ideas; nothing is even approaching concrete at this point.

If only there was some sort of info on when this would be close to being released. It's been over 2 years since it was announced, and the new post from April of this year makes it seem like they aren't really all that close to even releasing a beta version Sad

All tis waiting for good stuff makes me a sad panda.

Map of ZPI users locations and safe houses, feel free to add yourself, but don't provide actual home location!
