Buggies and a blowtorch...

Chilbert Posted: Sun, 10/28/2007 - 16:34

I was talking with someone the other day and they said that if zombies attacked, they would head to Wal-mart (keep reading it is an interesting idea) and close off entrances by lining up buggies side by side and flipped over (upside down), they they would secure them by welding them into place to form a metal barrier. The next set of buggies would be placed on top of them after removing the wheels. These would be welded into place with the open end facing up. Then, they would continue the process until a wall of welded buggies were blocking the entrance. They also said they would bolt the bottom buggies to the floor and use interlinked chains to secure them to what ever area. What do you guys and girls think of this idea? I told them that it "may" work but that the logistics of it may be a little harder to work out. Although, Wal-mart would have the tools to do it.

If you were going to do something like you have to face the fact that one day some one WILL come along and try to get into the store.

And not Undead either.

It might work if you know what you're doing but remember there's more entrances then the main one. And times a factor.

yah if you had plenty of time to put up that barricade it could work (not at my walmart, they don't have crap) and a living person would probably also have a hell of a time trying to get in, my walmart doesn't have: buggies, welders, chains (probably), bolts, anything good it just flat out sucks
but if your walmart had it, it would be quite a nice idea

That would take an awful long time. How would you secure the store while you were setting it up? And how would you be able to leave the store if you needed to? Or let survivors in, etc?

Like I said (or uhm...wrote), it wasn't my idea, I just wanted your opinions on it.

Wal-Mart doesn't have that many buggies. The best way to barricade walmart would be to clear off several of the shelves and then use the hardware section to create a barricade "ramp". This will prop the shelves up to the entrance and hold the weight while the shelves would keep the place sealed.

Sure, its a good idea, that is, if you had the time to put up the buggies when it happens.

So, we can all agree that this *might* be worth looking into with enough time and materials? That's what seems to be the general consensus...
All in all, I'd rather go for an older school building or maybe a public works building from the 1950s, they're generally made of brick and are very strong.

I would prefer to use a buggy as a bug-out vehicle; just load up a few days' worth of supplies for 1-2 people per buggy, and park them somewhere at your current base where you can get out quickly. Like a "bug-out pack", but even better, since you can get away faster, and carry more supplies further before you run out of gas.

Highway 17, anyone?

No. Buggies are not that large in stock at Wal-Marts. I know because I use to work at one.

I prefer the idea of using vehicles to block entrances.

Any other thoughts on how to block the entrance of a wal-mart?

As the zombie concept has built into pop culture, the average person is becoming more and more drawn to the large super store as their idea of a refuge. Malls, super Wal-Marts (that include the supermarket), Costcos, Sam's clubs ect. (if I'm losing our international crowd, these are basically warehouse setups that sell general food and supply items to the public in bulk).

Costcos would work better than Wal-Marts because they have the industrial doors to secure the entrances at night. Super Wal-Marts have automatic glass doors with a small lock because they are designed to never close. Malls and 24 hour super stores have so many entrances to secure. The buggies often have their own open door that one might forget to check and without power might be unable to close.

The shelves would probably work better and faster and often have their own mass to brace a set of glass doors while you do any welding or reinforcing behind them with other weight.

My guess is that minutes after you started working, desperate human livestock would come barreling up to the entrance with zombies behind them. If they found the doors in the process of being blocked, their first instinct would be to drive right into them. Then they would worry about the fact that they busted open a zombie door after the fact.

With the current pop culture connection to zombies, malls and Wal-Marts might be as bad as trying to go to hospitals or churches after it all starts.

I say any place with glass doors is for hit and run procurement and not for sleeping. Hide in the storage units next door and go shopping through the roof.

The bad part about Wal-Mart is that if you go in on a normal day, it is hard to tell if the zombie apocolypse has already begun or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As long as I have nothing, you can never take what's mine.
