Zombie population dynamics

The question before us - as an outbreak goes beyond the initial stages, where do the zombies go? Will they tend to stay in the general area they are created or travel? Will they stay clustered in hordes or diffuse out into a low density? What effect will barriers (rivers, mountains, heck, even highways) have on the movement of the undead over time? What will be the effect of presence or absence of living humans on their migrations?

And also, what would be a reasonable estimate of many Undead will be created, regionally, nationally, and globally? Will there be half a billion humans and 5.5 billion Undead? What percentage of Human/Zed would be reasonable? And how many people would be killed outright, not to return as Undead?

Those are qustions that can't be answered until zombies actually happen. Until then any suggestions would be just speculation.

Cell phone use in hospitals=BAD!!!!

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for I am the badest motherfucker in the valley!

Aren't all the topics in this part of the forum speculative? That hasn't prevented discussion in the past. Given a certain description of zombie physiology and behaviour we can make some educated guesses about their population behaviour and thus maybe learn a thing or two about how to take advantage of that.

I can only assume that the infected will travel where the food is as is the nature of most animals. As far as rivers i do not know how they will react, i mean they dont breathe do they? so why would water be a deterrent? (thats why i dont like the island idea) i tend to be more partial to a bunker idea.

As far as natural blockades other than waterways, the current occupation of humans has made it quite east to traverse long distances with little effort. I can only assume that the survivors will have to put forth an effort to make new barriers in their spare time long the route they chose to flee.

Zombies will always head for food sources. If they can't find one or are low on energy, they shamble about. This means they would congregate at the lowest geographic point (The path of least resistance) or the regions most frequented by food sources like humans.

i think if they do breath under water they would have to develop a new organ(my view very unlike likey), and if they do i dout they would be able to navigate though the dark cold water with out currents sweeping them away plus swimming takes alot of cordination and i dont think the walking on the ocean floor deal would work unless they are wieghted down some how

I think Undead will act Viral in nature. Meaning they will stay in one area until their resources are used up, then I would think the majority of them would slanter about in the general directions of food.

Natural barriers would have a huge effect, if not deterring Undead then at least impeding them. Sure, Zombie Johnny might not know that the forest in front of him is thick, but he might just spend a good month trying to go through it anyways.

As argued though this is all speculative. Hopefully they'll all just stay where they re-animated and rot.

...well personally i believe that zombies will travel to the food but once they don't know where it is....they'll just shamble around...EXE zombie goes to car/house where people are....eat people...chill there until more food is found.......OR they're super duper zombie senses will allow them to know where new food is... thats more joking then real...but hey its a possiblity...as for dispersal...i think they'll stay in groups...not for the social aspect...but because they're animal like and animals tend to be in groups...

If a zombie doesnt have a target, then i think it will just wander randomly until a target presents itself.
It would take a while, but eventually the masses of zeds in the cities will fan out in all directions.

Cant wait for that zombie invasion

some people have (through gen mutation) hearing as sharp as a dog, able to hear the ring of a cellphone from a football stadium away

wild animals can sense smell (like human sweat) from 5miles away

i agree about zombies not having targets but what if they can aquire targets very well?
