Though the site can be a bit heavy to browse through, instructables.com is a good site. The key is to dig through the right categories. Doing a search in any search engine for DIY and whatever youre interested in can get some good results.
The ram pump is a way of using no motors or spinning wheels to move water uphill. You will need a source of running water, however. And in order to get the water uphill, you will need a little bit of space below the source water ... the image should help clarify what I mean.
Another decent website is rotteneggs.com. Just click on the new eggs link and browse through the pages. Some of the stuff on there is just stupid. But there is actual stuff on there that works. I.E. Making a taser from a disposable camera. If your lucky they'll list some decent stuff.
